thanks

grounds? Ground connection is very critical on a boat. Is the solenoid exciter wire hooked up and working properly?

does it crank? take a screwdriver and jump the solenoid/battery wire directly to the starter... this will rule out bad solenoid or wiring/key/button issues.
also check your ground wire from battery to the block/bellhousing.

nope dose not evan crank...evrthing was fine ...and i installed a new fuel pump and the solenoid and then nothing ...i have key to my tack,fuel,fan...ect. im just thinking a wire or a conector is bad
-
ok...it cranks with a screwdriver :screwy: i forgot that one...

ok...it cranks with a screwdriver :screwy: i forgot that one...
jump wire from battery + to starter solenoid small post to bypass the ign/key. just keep troubleshooting. now that you know the starter works, that should rule out ground. if jumper wire doesnt work, its either not connected properly or a bad part. if it works its something with the ign/key/button/whatever you have.
just cuz the solenoid is new doesnt mean its GOOD. =)
-
yha evan put the ol one back on and still the same deal... gota be a bad wire or something
-
think i found the prob. its the ignition...it has power in the off pos. then when i turn the key on ...no power
-
ok...got new ignition and no dice :banghead: checked all wires and connections ...fixed all that looled like they mite be a prob. i have power at the key and the terminal block...what the hell could of happend...could of my coil went bad ??? :banghead: this is crazy!!! started 1 day and the next no go......
-
when ever i have a electrical prob i start from the beginning. start with the batt. as long as you have 12 volts move on . next use a test light make sure you have 12 volts to the ign switch. now turn the switch to the ON position you should have 12 volts to one side of the starter and to the solinoid. now you can turn the starter switch or use a screw driver and see what the starter does. another words with the screw driver touch one terminal and then the other (cross the two terminals) if nothing . its your starter or your solinoid. hope thisd helps.

yha jump with a screw driver and it cranks....im bigging 2 think that i got a bad solinoid ...but then when i put the old one back on that i know for sure worked...same deal so went through all the wireing and changed all that looked bad ...still no go i just cant understand what could of happend? gona get back after it agin 2marrow cuz wednesday off 2 gilroy 4 upholstery!!! seems kinda funny droping $3000 on seats on a boat that dont evan start :screwy:
-
if i jump my starter?and it cranks....dose it work? and how can i check if my new solenoid is good ?
-
ok yes if you jump the starter and it works , yes its good. now on to the solnoid you should hear a load click out of it when you power across it. if now its bad! just cause its new does not mean its good! what brand did you buy?? i always try to use standard brand on those type of things. let me know.

got from cp performance not sure what the name was ...got rid of box

can you link the part you bought? you can test a solenoid with a 12v lightbulb or an old trailer brake light. just wire the positive thru the large posts on the solenoid to the battery. run the ground to the - on the battery. take a small wire from the + on the battery and touch the small post of the solenoid. the solenoid should click and the light should turn on. a solenoid is nothing more than a big big relay.
-
just jumped the solenoid and it cranks...so the solenoid works :banghead: so starter works solenoid works key works :banghead:

sounds like some wiring gremlins...

yah now im thinkin you have a short to ground issue. wiggle the wires try to start it. if it cranks wiggle it again. look at the wires are they old and brittle???
-
this is a joke!!! mabe my wife is f-ing with me or it must be the grimlins :banghead:
-
another new one....this one from napa
-
another new part express from cp .....installed, wires cleaned, and repaired ....and no go :banghead:
-
nothing like nice new parts.hope it works for yah!!!

hows yer wiring skills? boats are pretty simple wiring wise. we could come up with a diagram in steps for you to follow. first would be ignition and starting, then gauges, then bilge pump, etc...

i,ve done my share of wiring...and yha it is simple...i just dont know what could of evan happend....like my prev post one day started fine no issue and the next day no go :screwy:
i really think a naighbors cat or rackoon or skunk....i know it sounds funny but theres alot around here....got in there when my seats where out ....but still that evan said...i have power at the key ign. start.and batt. and at the terminal block(new and new) and i jump starter and it jumps...jump solenoid and it jumps soooooo cleaned and put new connectors on evrything.....still no go....i just dont get it ...gona order new wire harness but i really dont think thats evan gona work :screwy:
-
When you get the boat back have someone turn the key to start it and use a test light/meter to make sure your getting power through your signal wire to the solenoid and with the key on in the run position make sure your getting power to coil. Sounds like the signal wire may have high resistance or broke. Or possibly there is a fuse in line?
Fat fingered from the phone- Corey
-
yep yep back after it when i get it back....its hurry up and wait now :banghead:

look at it this way... you bought a used boat, in unknown condition. just to make sure sometimes you just gotta redo things. better to find out NOW than in the middle of the lake when it doesnt start. easy way yo ruin a weekend. you think the wife has problems with the boat now, just wait until she has to paddle for 3 hours to get back to the trailer.
-
lmao...yes i have been there 2!!! been on the totaly other side of the lake when steering cable brooke!!! the funny thing was all my buddys were on the boat and "drunk" not me! and had no paddles!! try getting 5 drunk guys on the same page and no paddles!!! was the best trip i ever had  so im very happy this happend in my driveway

thats the one i have. telescopes and collapses into a nice little tiny paddle. its not like we have tons of space to store a giant paddle.

update.... it was the solenoid ...guess i got a bunk one :screwy: i know i cant return it but i sure will let cp know about it

why cant you return it? go post in their section on riverdavesplace and link this thread. theres been nothing but troubleshooting here. they should be more than happy to send you a replacement.
-
oh no any good store will take back a bad part. you do have receipt right????
-
ive had nothing but great results with CPP. even with some harman marine pieces i purchased that were bad/incorrectly drilled.
-
yha i,ve had nothing but good from them 2....i have a receipt . i just thought they wont take a part that has been installed ? but its cool im sure they will work something out with me... not a prob ill take care of it next week
-
ok new issue...thought i would use the thred cuz its kinda the same issue.... fuel pump workin and carb is getting gas .....i pump the pedel a few times ....and it starts...runs for like 1 min...and then shuts off...had the carb rebuilt a few years ago...and always ran fine....so do i have a float cloged ? is my choke not working ???? thanks for any help
-
ok a lot of questions here let start off with when it starts and runs and then dies it wont restart? or does it start right back up??
-
it wont restart untill i pump the pedle...then starts agin and the dies.....evan if i keep my foot in the gas it wont stay running
-
didnt change anything or touch anything on the carb....just replaced the manual fuel pump...
-
your fuel pump is not pumping right.
-
start at your fuel lines make sure there is no clogs. you want a nice free flow to the pump.
-
come on really...another bunk part :banghead: i can see it pumping gas through the filter....mabe just not pumping 2 the carb
-
the only thing i can think of is the new holly pump had bigger inlet and outlet so i had 2 reduce right at the pump...could this be the issue? i need bigger fuel lines?
-
start it up! as its running look at the filter . when it dies look at the filter if its empty well then you know.
-
no under a load maybe but not at idle.
-
fuel pump working 100% pumping way better than the old one.... :banghead:
-
anything? i dont think its the pump ...and i dont think its the carb....
-
pull the sight plugs see where the fuel is . adj from there. im thinkin that needle and seat are stuck and that is why it starts when you pump the throttle .
-
there are things that you can do to remove things it is not.
-
i wouldnt think the carb needs 2 be rebuilt agin :o but mabe it dose :screwy: gona clean it all out and see what that dose ...i guess
-
took the needles out...and found a big chunk of rubber or silacone in the front needle :o dont know how it got there ....dont know if that was evan the prob...
but i am sure it wasnt pose 2 be there
-
Yeah I found shit in mine too, it was bits of the float coming apart.

exactly the reason why you need to run a fuel filter/water seperator. a small piece of dirt can ruin your weekend, not to mention your motor. i have a water seperator before my fuel pump and then an inline smaller micron filter right after my pump.

I got same setup as you. This also another reason to use brass floats instead of the crumbly black neoprene ones.

looks like i rebuilding a carb :banghead: needle started working and now evrything leaks :screwy:
-
sorry man that sucks! but it should do it.
-
did a fast kit ...not the trick kit....but fired right up...but then cut out :screwy: think just need some adjusting
-
mine were brass...got new fuel lines and other stuff >:D
update...the black rubber crap in my carb was gasket sealer :screwy:
lesson learned .....
-
well??? how is it does it run????
-

where did you use gasket sealer? :sly: everything around the carb and fuel should be a solid gasket or compression fitting or barbed/hoseclamp, not some goo that can eventually get sucked in.
-
on the fuel pump gasket :screwy: getting inline filter from pump 2 carb 2day and then i will see how it runs
didnt want anymore rubber crap in the system...
-
this sucks :banghead: any help on where i should start with the needles ? on a holley
-
what do you mean?
-
ok just to clarify the float is attached to the needle and seat when te float level gets to a sertain point the float closes the needle into the seat.
-
well i set them at where the old ones were ...i thought ...but now it just keeps dumping fuel like ALOT and it just keeps pouring in...so this means my needles are way 2 high right?
-
watch and follow this. tells you everything about adjusting float levels.

thank you... i posted 2 soon ...and i didnt trust myself.. ::) i got it  and it runs awsome...
-
good! hope i helped.
-

Off topic but I hear ya. I was raised by my grandfather since my dad worked his ass off 7 days and 12 hours when I was a kid.. he kinda taught me that nothing is super complicated. Always said, "take it apart, and see whatcha see... I saw a float set correctly and fuel going past it no matter what.. too much fuel... Yeah, beyond the grave they still help.
