I have a 1978 21ft Hawaiian Jet Boat with an AMC 360 Motor and a Panther pump Jet drive. To be honest the boat has been sitting for several years. Now it's time to get it back in the water. I see that my steering cable is in dire need of replacement.
My question is, HOW DO I REPLACE IT? It looks like I don't have enough room to remove it pulling it into the engine compartment? Is it possible to replace it without removing the motor or pump?
I bought a new Teleflex Rack Mechanical Rack Steering System, and it looks like a pretty easy install except getting it though the transom?
I would appreciate and advice or direction from someone who has done this before.

Welcome to SCJB. What is obstructing the cable from coming back into the engine bay? Do you have pics of the inside of the transom area?
Maybe, if you take apart the helm and remove the cable, I believe the the metal end of the cable is smaller and might be able to fit better thru the transom.

It's a pain in the a$$ but it can done or at least I was able to get it done in my 18.6 Challenger with a 460 and a Berkeley pump by just removing the interior. Mine in a 1/4 stringer boat I did have to enlarge the hole where the cable went through the seat mounts to gain a little flexibility to get the metal end that attaches to the pump underneath the motor.

It really depends on how its run. I have a 20.5 footer. It's run along the gunwhale then comes out towards the engine then straight to and through the steering tube. Mine is on the drivers side (It's a jacuzzi pump). A new one will be flexible enough to make bends. The old one.... just cut it out in sections.

I talked with a couple of friends locally who all say the same thing..I'm going to have to either remove the jset drive or pull the motor...just not enough room to position the rod end of the cable through the transom and through the hole in the jet drive base.
So looks like I'm having to pull the jet drive..Not having fun with this!

Well, that's a bit different than a Berkeley. ???
I'm assuming the sleeve of the cable will not fit through that pipe fitting in the transom? No way to push it out through the transom?
Is the cable as far into the sleeve as it will go? If you turn the wheel all the way to the left, it should pull the cable into the sleeve as far as it can go.
Just reaching for any idea I could think of. But, after staring at those pics for 5 mins straight, I think you're out of luck. :-\

Well, I ended up taking the Jet Drive off. Followed the instructions from :http://www.americanturbine.com/downloads/pdf/instructions/Panther_Instructions.pdf, for the removal. I did have to cut the shift cable, it was not going to fit through the transom. So now the fun part! Finding a new shift cable, replacing the steering cable and Rack. Then reinstalling the jet drive.
What has become a common phrase in my life, " What could possibly go wrong?"
Apparently, a lot!!

So, after looking at it closer this morning. I think there may have been a slight chance that, had I know that the through hole pipe for the steering cable was threaded on both side, I would have tried to remove it from the engine compartment side, AND....that might have created enough of a gap around the cable to get a little angle on it to pull it out, without removing the jet drive?
So if anyone else comes across this configuration, I would recommend trying that first before pulling the Jet Pump of the back of the boat. It can save you hours of time and swearing!
