I got this issue with a new steering cable and steering tube end nut , and as much searching I've done I'm unable to find a reason why. , here is the issue I replaced my steering cable along with a new steering cable tube end nut the one that has the grease fitting , when I reinstalled everything the steering was working great after the boat sat for awhile the steering would lock up I'd loosen up the steering tube end nut and it would work great tighten it back up still worked great let it sit for a couple more days and it would lock up again I am completely baffled to what the issue could be the boat hasn't been in the water , looking for some suggestion as what to try

What steering tube nut? The cable nut? Or the bulkhead jamb nuts?

Cable nut like this one

There is a chance the threaded end is threaded crooked.
When you loosen the nut, does it free up immediately?
I have seen this before. But on an outboard. What we found was that the cable was hydraulically locking up. How much grease did you squirt in there? not much I hope.

Not really I have to spin the nut a couple of rotations , the threads are clear but I think your thoughts on too much grease is something I'm going to explore, when I get back in town I'll take the nut off clean up the grease and see if it locks up after a couple days if it doesn't I think we may have found a cause . We'll see thanks for the ideas GT
