Title: Still some water in the oil WTF?
Post by: GeneralLee on July 07, 2010, 08:20:05 AM
Here's the stick guys...

I bought my boat 2 months ago and tested it the first time on a 3 day trip to Big River. Needles to say came back with a whole lotta issues. Milkshaked the living crap out of the engine. Came home and took my whole plumbing apart. Added a valve to the inlet hose at the pump, added a water pressure gauge and come to find out my Bassett T valve was failing so I was getting more then just a misst at idle through my ot headers which also was fixed by replacing the spring.

I took the boat out a week later to Elsinore and ran it (not too hard, didn't go over 4K on the 455 olds) while diling my water pressuer in. The boat ran great and there was no water in the oil which I was very happy about. Took the boat out 2 more times to Elsinore after the 1st test run and ran her a bit harder (4500K) still no water in oil, water pressure didn't go past 10psi and still no misst at idle through my headers.

Just came back from a 4 day trip from Big River for 4th of July. Checked my oil and I'm missing half a quart and I have a little water in my oil, nothing too bad, hardly noticeable. I did also notice that my oil breather was sitting loosely on my groumet (I replaced my valve covers right before the trip and couldn't find a groumet that fit exactly so I used the next best thing) and one of my corners on the valve covers was cracked which caused me to lose the half a quart.

Could the little water in the oil be just condensation from the loosely fitting oil breather or crack on the corner of the valve cover. Or is it something else? I did run her pretty hard this weekend....5K. I know I know its an olds but the old man build her right. Should I just get rid of my water injection to the headers completely? I'm not worried about the chrome on my headers, I hate chrome! Will that eliminate my problem or is it something else? Even at 5K I didn't pass 12psi of water pressure so I hardly doubt I'm shooting too much water in there?

Is there water in the oil or just milkshake in the valve covers?  Milkshake in the valve covers is normal....so long as the oil on the dipstick still looks clear, you're good.

So far I noticed a little water in the covers nothing in the pan. I won't know until I add a little oil and start the motor. As of now I don't have enough on the dipstick to determine.

Btw I'm available all weekend long. Let me know if you need some help.

Because steam rises, if your going to see water in the oil anywhere, its going to be the valve covers.
Like pat already stated, if its not in the pan, not an issue.
Oh, and a picture never hurts when in doubt.

I did notice a bunch of steam coming from the oil breather at about 4500K...same steam your talking about???

Took off the vlave covers yesterday and notice a good amount of milkshake inside the valve covers...nothing on the springs, lifters etc. Also from what I can tell nothing in the oil pan. I got rid of my water injection on the headers and will test run her this Saturday at Piru.

Just for $hits and giggles, and mostly because I'm dealing with the remnants of what eventually happens from serious milkshake issues on an expensive engine, straighten out a coat hanger and drop it in your dipstick tube clear to the bottom of the pan and check for indications of water. Oil floats on water and might be well below the dipstick if it's sat for more than an hour or so. Bad news is, guess what the oil pump pickup grabs first when you fire it again? Water=dirt in an engine.

Otherwise, I think these guys are right.

If you're low on oil you aren't sucking IN water.   Why not change the oil again and see
what's actually IN there?

Ran it on Piru today, friggin sucked! The wind was to high and water was nasty choppy. Couldn't take it past 3k. I did do the coat hanger trick and it came back up with nothing but oil.

I'm waiting for pat to come back in towne so I can borrow his badass pump again to suck the oil out. We'll see what comes out... the oil looks good on the dipstick and my oil pressue is between 60 and 80. If I did have water in there wouldn't my oil pressure drop noticably due to being thinned out by water. Just a thought???

if its not white on the dipstick then its just condensation. you need to get some heat in the motor by slowing down the water flow from the pump.

Need horsepower to make heat.....he's got an olds...no heat.  ;D

Hey Belmir...I might have a nice Ford motor for you this weekend (if Ralph doesn't steal it).

Hardy har har never knew Pat was such a funny guy. Makes plenty of heat and enough horsepower wiseguy. The motor runs between 160 and 190 and the water pressure doesn't go above 12psi. There's no white on the dip stick only under the valve covers.

Thx for the offer Pat but I'm an Olds guy. So far this motor has done nothing but run like a mule. That weekend at Big River I held it at 5K and she still runs hehe. I'm gonna run the piss out of her and is she blows she blows. After that I'm gonna either build ir or go with a 502.

I do need to borrow that sexy vacuum pump of yours and get a quart of oil from the bottom of the oil pan just to make 100% sure there's no water in there.

Wait a minute... There's such a thing as "an Old's guy"? lol

Yep right here hehehe...after checking out my buddies blown 455 which he built 3 years ago and abuses every other weekend and still runns the way she did the first day, I became a huge olds fan. Sure it takes a lot more cash to get an olds like that but at least I'll have the bragging rights of not being another ridiculously built BBC on the water (which everybody and their mother builds cause they are sssooo damn cheap compared to an olds or ford).

No offense towards any chevy gguy, god knows I'm a HUGE chevy fan when it comes to old school american muscle but there's just too many on the water that are built up the whazoo (exmaple my pal Pat hehehe)
