Title: Stock 454 Speeds
Post by: SuperDuty on February 16, 2011, 02:16:41 PM
I have been trying to find a good priced 468 online and its just not happening! They're either out of my price range or sold right away.. So heres my question.. If I cant get ahold of one, I already have a stock 454 2 bolt with some little stuff on it but internally stock. What kind of speeds would I be seeing if I was stuck with the stocker? I know it depends on my whole setup but maybe some of you that have run a stocker could give me some numbers. Its either going in the sleekcraft with a berkely or an Eliminator with a casale Vdrive (dont know gear ratio yet). Also.. How much would you guys think is a reasonable price to pay to have it hot tanked and looked over? I pulled the heads and everything looked fine but Id want to be sure about it before I threw it in a boat. Thanks!

Bone stock--454, 220 hp smog motor turned my jacuzzi ss/b impeller to 4400 r's, about 52-53 mph, through logs n snails
Added cam, K/B Hypers, O/T headers, airgap victor jr, holley 750, pushed the same pump/boat to 5500 r's, 68.4 gps'd at the river.
Cam it, good exhaust and intake and go boating!
Hope this helps

I had a mercruiser 330 run 65 on the gun up river with a 21' crusader pickle with an A/T.
A 330 is a 454 10.25-1 .488 lift cam and a large set of oval port heads. Atleast that is what was in it when I tore it down. I believe that it was an out of the box 330 mercruiser. I also had a tunnel ram with two 660's on it. I probably could have gained a little with a single carb and a large dual plane intake, but……

How much are you looking to spend? And how much are you looking to get?

This is just going to be a reliable motor until I build something bigger and then it'll be a back up. Id be happy with 60mph out of it for now. I have an intake, 850 Holley, hyd cam, high cap oil pan, and some other small things. It'll work for now!

Believe this or not..... :sly:

Stock 330 HP Mercruiser engines are; Cast pistons with peanut port heads with a CR of about 8.75:1, cast crank and a step above a truck cam.....  (I have three of them here..  :screwy: .) Yours was either very early or someone did a presto chango for a Magnum.

But your performance estimate sounds typical for what you had.

There is nothing wrong with building a stocker with some good parts to get the boat wet. In all honesty, it takes more than 50 extra HP to actually have the Ass-O-Nometer tell any significant differences. Speed wise, 50 HP translates to approx. 2 MPH, so don't beat yourself up. Concentrate on tuning the entire package and you will get more enjoyment out of it.

Where I continually see guys and gals get themselves in to trouble is where they build a badass engine, but miss the setup. If properly tuned and with matching parts, a turn key 60+ MPH jet is pretty easy to achieve.

What I mean by "matching parts" is, you don't put a dual four tunnel ram with 600 CFM carbs on a low compression 454 and a stock grind cam, it just wont work well.  :-\
