Title: Stock 454 with Panther exhaust
Post by: Munchbox on February 24, 2015, 06:46:25 AM
newbie here and have a quick question? Motor is fully stock but has the hei ignition and Panther exhaust. I was wondering what the best carb and intake would be for this motor? The carb needs to be rebuilt so I figured because it has been sitting for so long just replace carb. I believe it currently has a holly 750. Any help would be great

We will need a little more info like what kind of boat will this be in.  Do you know what size impeller you have or how many RPMS the boat runs.  I would guess you would be fine with the Holley 750 and performer manifold or something close to it.  Not sure what you would be expecting for added HP this may give little to none.

Does it by chance have a panther pump also

If you got a Holley and is isn't froze-up just rebuild it.

Aluminum intake would sure look nice be hella lighter than stock intake motor might feel more crisp but power wise might not be felt too much.

I recently changed my carb to have mechanical secondary set-up that was worth the coin least thats what im tellin myself

It's a 79 Tahiti day cruiser. I rebuilt carb and it seems to purr nicely. Hasn't had it in the water yet. It has a berk 12jc jet. The car. Is a 750 vac secondary. I'm not concerned with looks as it will be covered. I'm guessing 6k would be mad rpm but it's just a guess

Oh sweet its got a berk.
Yeah it most likely wont spin up to 6,000.

If the carb isnt a rusty paperweight I say rebuild it.

I had a 78 Tahiti mini with 454 and a 750 DP worked like a charm, was a comfy boat for the fam

. It most likely will max out below 4500 RPM. Depending on the  condition of the carb I would just have it rebuilt. You could think of it like a garden hose with 4 kinks in it. You could fix one of the kinks without a noticeable difference fix one more still very little change. Now you're a thousand deep and getting pissed or your in denial. Lot's of guys have expected a big change with fixing one kink. Now add a manifold, cam. Carb and a exhaust mod of some sort. Now the hose is flowing your 2800.00 deep and you like it but then the sickness kicks in. I need a lighter hull I will just call Andy and give Mr Bostick a ring as well. Now your 50,000.00 deep but real happy. Carb rebuild ?  Most of us all have the sickness to some degree.

X2 go get a edelbrock performer intake and look into a carb with mechanical secondaries in the future.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I rebuilt carb and it purrs pretty nice. Next question would be about timing. At idle I'm around 16 btdc and at 2k it would appear to be around 30btdc. Does this sound right? Also if I have the boat running out of the water with the hose attached to the t in the front of the motor is it normal for it to heat up really high? I'm assuming since the pump isn't pumping water throught the system that this would be somewhat normal and I need to minimize the amount of runtime while the boat is out of the water.
