so we put a brand new 383 stroker in my friends out drive (i/o) hallett. the motor ran good. we submerged the outdrive in a huge bucket for cooling the motor. we started the cam break in. about ten mins into we noticed the motor was real hot!!! so we shut it down. we figured the large can was not working for cooling it down.
so the next day i drag that bitch to the lake. same problem i figured when it started moving the water would be forced into the motor. but we could only run it for 3-5 mins before it started overheating again. the temp guage read fine due to there being no water in the motor.
so i make some calls to the local boat shop and i find out there there is an impeller inside the outdrive that supplies the water to the engine water pump. so i have been running this motor with no water in it. granted i did not run it long but i am still a little worried.
The oil looks clean as when it comes out of the bottel. it was hard to even see the fluid line cause the oil was so clean.
i guess my question is what is your guys opinion on the motor. think it is fine from putting that heat thru it when it was brand new.
It is a 383 with a NICE set of pistons a mild cam and torker heads.
anyway just let me know what you think

So, was the impellor in the outdrive bad?

this is aquaholic.. and ya the impellor in the out drive was bad. it is at the boat shop now.

you should be ok. They arent aluminum heads right? because cast iron heads will take alot more abuse and high temps before warping. Run water thru the engine and see how it runs when you get it back.

lol on an I/O setup the engine water pump impeller is lil rubber gear looking thing and if you let ur boat sit too long itll rott, and you have to take it out and change it, and if you happen to have a pontoon boat its a B!tch lol.

ya I change the one on my brothers boat the beginning of every season, easy to do and real CHEAP insurance. just my .02

Also, From what I've been told you should never run one of those things without water, at all. It will instantly start tearing up the impeller. Just get one of those clampy things that go over the drive and hook to a hose, there cheap.

Double check with the shop to make sure they got all the rubber debris out of it. The shop a couple doors down from me was telling me he had one in recently that he pulled out enough rubber to make 2, maybe 3 water pump impellers. The guy that brought it to him had it done at another shop but was still having heating issues (duh) ;D

I had the same problem with my MasterCraft. I didnt supply enough water from the hose and fried the impeller in about 3 minutes. I now carry an extra at ALL times. I dug a bunch out and rinsed out all the hoses. I am sure if he took it to good shop they will do the same thing and hopefully back flush it to get the rest of the chit out.

thanks guys. i think all is well. the guy we left it with seemed cool and he seemed to know what he was talking about. he is going to remove the outdrive make sure it is all aligned and repair the impellor. also give all the linkages and everything a once over since we had the motor out.
i will let you guys know. i plan on taking this boat to blythe this weekend so get off your couch and come out. i think the ridgecrest crew is bringing down 4 boats plus the rest of my crew at mcintyre. should be fun.
