card problem?...I think
« on: July 22, 2013, 05:43:17 PM »
What does it mean when fuel keeps running out of the carb (into engine) after the engine is shut off? Plus, engine is loading up at idle, and misses and sometimes even dies due to flooding out. On a side note...it runs better and faster than ever at higher RPM. Have made no changes at all...problem comes and goes, but is getting worse. sometimes gas will run out the tailpipes.

stuck float.  sounds like if it runs better at high rpms with excess dumped fuel that you might have a problem with your secondaries or the jetting for them isnt enough.

Took front bowl off, and cleaned out all the funk, and blew out the jets with carb cleaner. Took out the float and needle and cleaned them all up as well. Not sure how to set a float, so I just put it back in about the way it was. Fired it up in the garage-10:25 PM here!  Started way to easy...for not haveing any fuel in the bowl,-did have a fair amount of carb cleaner down the manifold. Only ran it for about 10 seconds twice, but seemed to idle as well as ever for a cold motor. Probly wont get to try it on the water for a few days, but mabe this will help. If I have the float set to low...the worst that will happen is the engine may suck the bowl dry...RIGHT???? If it is too high, fuel will still dump into the carb like crazy... RIGHT????   Or am I way off?

watch that.  if the float is too low you'll run out of fuel.  if its too high it will just dump it via the overflow tubes.  it should sit riiiight at the sight plug with a little tiny drip.

The floats are pretty easy to set. It only has to be running if you have a mech fuel pump. I did mine with just the elec fuel pump running. I had the same problem and I had to install a fuel pressure regulator. You never want to run with the floats to low. You will be at risk of running to lean which can lead to a lot of bad things. Maybe even destroy a couple pistons, rings or the whole bottom end from pre-detonation

Took the boat for a ride...Ran fine.  Did seem to run out of gas one time when I floored it from idle, so I raised up the needle a little bit, with the sight screw out, but still did not see any fuel at the proper level. Boat ran normal after that. Won't be able to use the boat this weekend, so I decided to pull the carb (HOLLY 750 double pumper with vaccume secondairies) and have it re-built at a good local shop. Hope It comes back and runs better than ever!
