That doesn't look right
« on: March 21, 2016, 03:31:28 AM »
So I finished scraping off the old gaskets getting ready to set on my new intake manifold when I realize there's a square port that is exposed that was covered by the old manifold what am I missing here?

The new manifold is a victor Jr stamped 2904.. The old one was an edelbrock performer 2-0 stamped 2161
Motor is a 454 gen IV..
I also looked at the markings on the heads and curious to see what anyone knows about them "3964290" any help is appreciated and thank you in advance

You wanted the 2902 for rectangle port heads, the 2904 is for oval port heads. Maybe not. Hmm.

I have a 454 gen IV block with the 2902.

Interesting problem now that I've looked at the 2161, this is for the oval port heads and the pic does look like oval port.

The head part number tells me 396, mine end in 990 which are the square port.

Someone with more knowledge will tell us both what's going on here.

It's fine. Run it.  That outer port goes nowhere.

That's pretty normal guys.

That's just a cooling ring for when the exhaust crossover is used. It is blind and goes nowhere. Use the little metal block off plates and bolt it down.

These are oval port heads and the intake I bought is oval port as well.. I kinda worded it wrong but just that exhaust crossover is  square lol. Anyways thank you again for taking the time. Much appreciated,

I'm still curious to know if these heads are any good performance wise or  not

69-70 Oval Ports, closed chamber, 101cc chamber. (this from the Mortec site). The smaller chamber should help with compression. Not a terrible head. Could benefit with bigger valves.
