on saturday i took the boat out to elsinore for the first time ever it ran grate for about 10 min long story short i shot a rod out of the oil pan whhen i got home i pulled the motor. first thing i took off was the oil pan and found my rod and a bunch of chunks of metal and what looked like red barf and it was everywhere inside the motor second i pulled off the intake manifold off where i found a red shop rag sitting in there. so when i took the boat to have it tuned up and the intake manifold gasket changed they forgot to take the rag out of there :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I certainly hope you made a phone call.... Actually two calls...
The second call would be to a paralegal...
That is gross negligence.

They were already closed when I found it today but I'm gonna go in there tomorrow with pictures and yeah I called my girlfriends grandpa he's a Supreme Court judge he's knows some people that will help me out
-
Good luck, hope they're willing to take care of it.
-
Thanks man I hope they are too because this this is for lack of a better term, fucked up
-
Oh I would be pissed. I'd most likely be there first thing tomorrow morning with the motor waiting for the shop to open

Third call would be for a 60' crane truck to make sure the impact of "dropping it off" is not wasted. >:D ;)
-
Yeah don't get me wrong I'm beyond pissed but the bummer part to me is I've been taking my dads boat to these guys sense I was 10 and now I'm bringing my boat there and it just sucks that something like this happened but I've never had an issue with them so I'm hoping it gets taken care of and doesn't have to go to the next level
-
Wow. That is bad. This is a perfect example I do all the work myself (assembly, measuring, checking the machine shops work, etc).. So when shit happens you have nobody to blame. Hope it all works out for you.
-
I have a ton of years in the field of auto mechanics , but i can honestly say i have never seen anyone leave a red rag in an engine (other than the few photos) when you talk to them you want a new engine (rebuilt ) and ready to go! Cause i dont think there is anything left of yours, you are going to be able to use!
-
if it is a stand up shop they will accept what they did and get you back on the water asap. accidents happen its how the shop handles it that will make them stand out or be scum.
give them a chance to fix it before rallying the troops.
-
Yeah my dads best friend has had an auto shop for 35 yeah and said he has never seen or heard of that
-
When I bought my first boat in 1980 the intake was leaking.... Pulled it and found a tube of perma gasket in the lifter valley ..... ?
Sure hope they stand by their work. Good luck.
-
to me...looks like more than one red rag... :o
looks like its going to be a ready to run Paul Kane longblock O0 to get you back on the water asap!!
heres a link ;D time to go shopping!

I tell you what though im gonna think twice before take my boat to the shop when its something im capable of doing. lesson 1 dont be a lazy ass :banghead:

dont get me wrong i totaly understand "giving them a chance" but in this day and age with people less than likely not willing to accept responsibility or having some blanket statement inside of their invoice that you sign that says they're not liable for anything you need to make sure you have all of your ducks in a row so that going forward you're protecting yourself.
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. when you talked to them, what they said (record it if possible because in 8 months if it drags out to a court apperance its gonna be a he said/she said and you're not gonna remember specifics) take pictures of everything, how they reacted and most importantly stay a cool cucmber through it all but be assertive. "this is what happened, you are at fault, what are you going to do to remedy the situation and how long is it going to take?" if it takes too long or they dont do what they say its back to the courtroom way of getting things done. dont start posting on their facebook or slandering them.

I took pictures of everything I have times dates I haven't moved the rag or the motor. I have the work write up that says what they did and the date on that. I've basically done everything I can do before I go talk to then witch is gonna happen around 1 today so ill keep you guys posted. And as for the Facebook thing I wouldn't do that it's not high school that's also why I haven't posted the name of the shop on here because it's a smaller local shop. And I totally under stand shit happeneds it's just a matter of how the shop handles them.
-
hopefully they replace it with a chevy.
^-^

And make sure they leave the jet alone and don't put in an I/O ;)
-
Ahah yeah I wash I wouldn't mind a 454
-
Oh no, that is screwed! Good luck with the shop. I had something similar happen, the hospital left a shop rag (sponge) in my gut, all I got was another surgery and 5 days in a coma - hope you come out better than that.

-
They were just trying to keep the motor clean and free of oil..

WTF?!?! Damn sorry to hear that one.
-
Believe it or not but we hold mechanics to a much higher standard than physicians. If your mechanic installs your rod caps backwards and you throw a rod he's in deep do-do and you'd consider him to be incompetent - if your Doctor leaves a twist in your colon and it damn near kills you - it isn't a mistake, or error, it's considered a bad outcome - you can't even sue unless he did it on purpose, or because he was drunk or something. Incompetency isn't malpractice, go figure.
-
any news?
-
So I went over to the shop to talk to the owner he tried to fight me a little on it until I showed him the pictures and he said bring me the boat and the motor and ill take care of it

-
So I just dropped the boat an the motor off at the shop. The owner said he's going to do what ever it takes to make this thing perfect. So hopefully ill have a boat back in time to finally meet some of you guys in Blythe in September

Since the shop did the right thing, now would be the time to name it so others know where to take their motors to....-Rich
