Title: Thought blew a head gasket at season opener
Post by: 79 ranger jet on March 30, 2015, 07:07:57 PM
Come to find out bent a push rod and had water in cylinders put new one in cleaned out cylinders to put it around for Saturday. I get home make a few calls and to find out someone told me my headers allowed the cylinders to suck water in a I do run them wet and they are on a valve any other opinions on this also I now have no compression in number 1 cylinder and also if I was to run dry headers won't they get to hot and burn up my plug wires

There is so much going on here. I going to hit you one at a time.

Come to find out bent a push rod and had water in cylinders put new one in cleaned out cylinders to put it around for Saturday.

That sucks...

I get home make a few calls and to find out someone told me my headers allowed the cylinders to suck water in

Maybe... maybe not. It could be numerous things.

I do run them wet and they are on a valve any other opinions on this

Lots, but in all honesty, the Bassett valve is either a pass fail thing. Not sure why so many have issues with them.

I now have no compression in number 1 cylinder and also if I was to run dry headers won't they get to hot and burn up my plug wires

They don't burn the wires on a Corvette.   :sly:

But they sure do get silly hot... I am not convinced about the reversion issue...

Ok so I take off all the rockers and o now have compression in the cylinder

So... valve kiss piston or water ingestion (reversion?)
or maybe a lobe going flat? (fresh motor / no compression on # 1)

Just a  w.a.g.

If it had a bent valve or a lobe goin flat it wouldnt all of a sudden have compression in the cylinder when the rockers come off

Sounds like you had too much block pressure...

so... I've never tried running a compression check with the rockers off, However, I've done a 'bleed down test', no gauges, just an air compressor filling the cylinder, listening for escaping air.

what does a compression check tell if the rockers are off?

School me.

Well if it had said bent valve from piston kiss seems to me. Cylinder in question would still have shittola for compression with rockers removed.. if a valve had been way to tight with rockers on it would have shittola for compression as well... no expert by any means.. just my 2 pennys.

This was the 460 and it was the very first rocker I could tell right away when I took valve cover off that the spring look compressed further down then all rest through full rotation

Now my plan of attack is let me know if this the right direction I'm going go to adjustable roller rocker set up and have the pushrods sized to fit

Well I'm not 100% that it was but I do believe so just stock 460 pushrods
