Rpm gauge stopped working

Started my boat and everything was fine for a min then seen smoke inside my rpm gauge engine still running turned it off checked wires under dash all are good oops forgot to say rpm gauge jumped around and then quit before I shut it off any help is appreciated and it is a Faria gauge

Was it just hooked up or same gauge for years an no wiring done recently? It's definitely toast now.
