What's your thoughts and experience with the 455 olds motor? (Why do people say to avoid this motor? Stick with ford or Chevy).

Ok the real reason they say stay away from olds is , you cannot just buy a motor and throw it in. there are things that need to be done! i run a olds 455. As a matter of fact i am going to be building one for my v-drive.
They are great motors! but require you to pay attention . it really is going to depend on what you are going to do with your boat.

Olds motors are cruiser motors not a hot rod motor. Olds have probls with oil getting trapped up top and not returning to the pan fast enough therefore burning up bearings. Best thing to do is run a 12 qt pan. Do not put a high volume oil pump on there you'll only being screwing yourself more. I have an olds 455 in my float and I have no complaints accept I want to go faster lol. Mine starts and runs all day ( with a good carb ) lol. It really depends on what you wanna do with the boat

if you already have a motor or have one that needs to be cleaned up and you're on a budget... sure.
if you're starting from scratch id steer clear. theres plenty of other options out there with more potential and less negatives, not to mention more over the counter PARTS for them than the olds motors.

Cuz Chevy owners can't beat a Ford, Pontiac, or Chrysler very often, and so they have to feel superior to something? But keep that to yourself cuz Bowtie guys get all butt hurt when they accidently stumble into Real World. >:D

X2 stay with the olds the more the better. We can beat all the other guys with our 455. Beat I mean how many boats have 455 in them not racing them. Just out to have fun and not break down all the time.

I can't speak for the bb but I have a 350 olds in mine, works great, 16ft cobra jet with a new Berkeley 12je, I'm happy!

Don't they are crap I have had two. One in a motor home and it popped. And another in a 21'Elimanator jet popped. They do not return oil to the pan fast enough, sends the bottom end to pieces.

An Olds can be a great, reliable motor. They just have limitations for hi performance. If you want to build it for performance,
they need a lot of modifications and will still have limits compared to Chevys and Fords. They weren't meant to be run at hi RPM's
for a long time.

I had the same decision to make, so I want to remind you that it isn't just going with a diff motor. It will mean $$$ for new exhaust, intake, alternator, oil pan etc. Granted if you go BBC all these things are easily found, but they all add up the cost. Olds blocks are all pretty much the same, and if you already have forged pistons and a good crank then you are halfway there. Someone can probably post a link to Timm's article about how to build the Olds for long life in a boat, or call Tom at JBP or David at R&D and they can give you the info you need most. There are a TON of little things you can do to improve longevity, it all depends on how much you want to spend at the machine shop.
I admit there is a certain sense of satisfaction when your Olds outruns a Chevy but . . . that doesn't happen very often. In the end, I found a smoking deal on an Olds long block ($500) that had just been built with all the good parts from a member on here who had cracked his hull. Good luck with what ever you decide.

If the Olds is running good, fix your hull. Make sure your pump is good.
How is the roost now? It should put up a descent one. But, there is more to jet boating than a rooster tail.

Yeah it's possible. If they were built to similar HP,an Olds is going to cost more build if you want to run it like that and last more than a season.
A Chevy and Ford have more potential for higher HP at a lower cost.
