Title: too much carb ? What to do to make it take it?
Post by: nolongergreen on May 28, 2014, 07:17:31 PM
I have 2 600 holleys on top of a weind tunnel ram intake. Its on basically a stock motor with a 270h cam. In the jet boat world it seems not nessesarily to big but in the car world it would be too much. Any opinions? It does have basset headers with no mufflers to help flow on the other end.

I currently have other problems with the motor since it has a bad vibration in it but im hoping its not a bent rod or the crankshaft messed up and if so i may go ahead and build it but im hoping not to have to. Gonna change the plug wires tommorow and hope for the best but i think its deeper than that. I want to run the twin carbs with the intake that ive invested in but I just dont know if it will be too much for it.

Probably gonna try it anyway but just asking for opinions on whether it will work.
Thanks

Also i'm curious if something is wrong with the crank, can i put a small stroker type crankshaft in it and leave everything else the same and reap any benefit without having to put a  full "stroker kit" in it .

Stroker crank is gonna need matching rods and pistons. As for the twin 600's... in a boat... eh... it may be the most ideal setup for your pretty much stocker, but it should still run pretty good if setup properly... the trick is getting the carbs in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing... not setup right, and you will not be a happy camper.

what changes would be required to run the tunnel ram setup and not worry about being too much. I bought all this stuff new including the sccop for it so id like to run it and will do so at first, but if it is too much for it what would i need to chamge to make it really work right? Im sure a bigger cam verses the 270 and roller rocker arms.
Let me know, I dont exactly want to put in a large stroker kit but let me know.

Hey guys,
Pretty much what I'm asking is I've got over a grand tied up in the carbs , tunnel ram, scoop, ect. I don't really want to set it on the shelf and wait until I have to do a complete rebuild on the motor to use it. Are there any mods besides dumping several thousand dollars into it to make it run with the dual 600 carbs? I know I can build a motor by throwing the whole wallet at it but it's summer time now.
Is there a bigger cam I can do to make it work?
Sorry for all the questions that may or not make sense but I own a carpet cleaning company. If you've got questions about any of that I've got plenty of answers but motors I'm learning as I go and in turn it's costing me a small fortune.
I'm still trying to find where my miss or vibration is coming from but if I have to go into the motor and I'm torn down to the point I can and should make any changes,  I'd like to know what changes I need to make.
I hope this makes sense. ..

I'm not the engine expert here. Not even close, but I have heard of people running dual 600s on an otherwise stock big block. That doesn't mean it is set up perfect, but it will run and get you through the season. Hopefully someone else will chime in and give you more specifics or help you figure out the other problems you having. But you should be able to use the tunnel ram.

I was running two 750 basically on a stock four bolt truck motor and had to run a slightly hotter plug for the oil blow by and just went down two jet sizes from what my holley book said and ran the piss out of it for seven years. Try snd fine tune it and see what she likes jmo

We ran a factory Z/28 crossram with dual 600s for years on a smallblock with no real problems.  We gained a few hundred RPM on top and lost a bit of oomph on the bottom but we looked bad ass.  You should be fine with your set up other than you will use more gas most likely.

Read through the threads posted, alot of useful info. First on your list to do, is find out if you have a mechanical problem with your engine before trying to dial in the induction system. I have an 86 18' Caribbean jet boat with a fresh 467 BBC that I built from scratch. My induction consists of an Edelbrock street tunnel ram dual inline Holley 600 vac. secondaries part # 4160. Both vac. sec. canisters are tied together with the light silver spring. 6.5" power valve's Quick Fuel Technology memering plates in the secondaries so I can tune with Holley jets. I opened up the (PVCR) holes up .010 to feed just a bit more fuel at WOT. I also machined the upper plunum cover to accept Magna Fuel reversion plates. I dyno tuned the engine and had to stagger the jets to compensate the "robbing Peter to pay Paul" in the plenum because the throttle bores are not right over certain runners. Don't forget the importance of a strong ignition system, I run the MSD Marine 6A system and it does great. The engine made 507 ft. lbs @3,600 and 542 HP @ 6,000. Have had GPS readings @ 77 mph, so I'm fine with that. Every one's combo is slighty different, but just try and keep it simple.... hope this helps a bit.

that's an excellent carb set up there and don't let anyone tell you differently.
