Title: Top mount starter and matching flywheel ???
Post by: 2savage4you on January 29, 2009, 02:05:49 PM
Is there such a thing?  I have a line up problem on my starter/flexplate  and if i used the flywheel that came with it i will have to move the engine forward and that aint gonna happen ( upholstery) .

SOMEBODYS GOT TO KNOW SOMETHIN.

If i can find something matched that i know will work i will go that route, the rear mount allows for a top mount that is why im thinking top starter and eliminate the lower

We ran one on a jet boat for several years, and I liked it--seemed to make sense to have it located up out of the bilge. However, the starters themselves are pretty expensive--I'm thinking around $300--and they turn backwards because of the reverse (top) mounting.

Look on eBay for used Mercruiser bellhousings and reverse rotation starters.  My 2pc driveline cover even bolted up to it.  Bellhousing $25, starter $45.  The deals are out there.

i had the same problem with the rayson craft it didnt wanna match up...lemme elaborate the old motor was fine when i put the new motor in "different flexplate" it didnt wanna hit...so i did the dumb thing and bought a new regular rotation starter...it worked i wanted to be on the water...personally i like the top mount just for ease, but life isnt that easy...and we all own jet boats so its a shitty world...however i wouldnt have it any other way ..see you on saturday buddy love ya buddy

My bellhousing has a small access at the 12:00 position, and a timing mark on the inside...so you can time it from the back side of the motor...

I hate to think i have to yank my engine everytime a starter takes a dump, and there is no telling how the starter i have works ( Its the one that came with that 468-396 dealio remember that mistake ;D)  But its a remanufactured :D

Now will they tell you how many teeth you need for that starter, mine is a 168 Pioneer flexplate sound about right..

beside the Eliminator has a top mount and i really like that ;)

Yeah, see you saturday :-*
