Identifying noise

So at the avi trip I kept hearing a light knocking \ clinking  sound that would come and go not specific to RPM. No metal in the oil, so I changed fluids, greased everything I could get to and took it to Parker the next month. Ran great for three days and then bam loud clinking like a marble bouncing around near the thrust bearing, back of the engine.

What's the best way to separate an engine \ jet with three point mount to isolate whether it's pump, engine, or drive line?

I couldn't find foreign object looking through the intake nor handhole of the pump; was hoping it was just a rock or something easy.

You can unbolt the H-bar from the flywheel but its tuff with it in the boat, and I'm not sure if you will be able to clear the flywheel to fire it.  I'll bet its your thrust bearing.  That what mine sounded like but i also had a humm that changed with RPM. Just my guess....

Sounds like maybe a u joint going. Oil pressure fine?

I kinda wonder if it's in the Ujoints also like Jims says, or even the Jet. Being you greased it and it went away for 3 days and came back sounds like you lubed it but now the lube is gone. Lube it again and see if it goes away again.  Just a possibility.

Yes, oil pressure is good. Looks like something has to come out, engine or pump, to check the u joints anyhow.

How much slip is available in the yoke? Could be joint bind.

Hey Dan, yes it's a 3 point. Here are some pictures. Looks like there's a bunch of grease on the inside of the bell housing; do u joint fling grease when they're going bad?










Kind of hard to get the flash of the phone in there or flashlight and camera.

I know it's a dumb question, but how do I check the slip? Unbolt the PTO and see how much it slides?

I dry fired the boat and there were no unusual sounds. I put my ear to a screwdriver and placed it on the pump housing, bell housing, thrust bearing housing, etc. and didn't hear the pinking / clinking / whining sound anywhere.

Anyhow, here are the shots from the grease zerk side of the u joints. In all honesty, I can't remember adding grease to these and probably meant to, but didn't.
