Can i put a tunnel ram set up on a basically stock Gen V 454? Will it run well? Worse? I figure that 2 390 CFM Holleys would be ok since it would only equal 780 CFM. is there more to this? I wouldn't mind getting a new cam and valve train. But i have no plans on any other engine mods. And i plan to keep my logs. If it doesnt make any improvements thats ok. I really like the cool factor. I just dont want it running worse. This would be a 1 to 1 deal with the linkage, Right? Teach me! Pros/Cons. Thanks!

your carb math makes sense to me. but im not sure if its right or not? i wouldnt think a tunnel ram would hurt you though, i run a fairly tall high rise manifold on a bbf and didnt see any gains or losses when i made the switch. good luck im sure some one on here will know.

Well, If your Gen V has peanut port heads, like mine did, I would upgrade the heads first, at least to 049s or 781s, or go with rect. port heads, then cam it accordingly...however, Ive seen a 460 ford 4x4 snowplow truck run one, even had a choke (or 2?) and ran and idled fine, so anything can be done. Will a tunnel help any on a stock app? prolly not or not much. In theory, they like 4500+ rpm to start getting the hp. but the cool factor is there :thumbup:

well yes it will work but wont do you any good. in an engine things need to match. as in the cam needs to run in the rpm range that your intake does and vise versa. your heads need to be able to flow that kind of volume . and peanut plug heads stock wont do it.and yes your snails and logs will work , but they wont either. your whole system is just really restrictive. and a tunnel ram needs to be able to draw in and the rest has to flow out! buy put it on your shelf give yourself a goal. hell try it out but you wont be happy with it until you do other things .

Tunnel Rams are only going to work properly with high comression, and higher end camshafts/valvetrain/heads designed to flow and operate at the higher RPM bandwidth the TR's are designed for. Perfect for the RPM range we operate Jet Boats in, to be honest, but dropping one on a bone stock 454 will truly dissapoint you.
In point of fact, it's probably going to drop performance considerably, so I wouldn't even mess with it, unless you're building a new engine for next season or something.
390CFM carbs are WAY small on a TR. They would probably work fine on a street car that's "All Show/No Go", but the reality of it is if the engine is built with the intention of running a TR (11:1 compression minimum, high flow heads, headers, a camshaft in the 292* or better range with substantial lift and solid valvetrain to support all this) Then it's also going to require much larger carbeuretors. Weiand recommends 600-700 CFM on the street and 650-850 CFM race (pretty much the rpm band we operate in). Thats EACH carb. Most common I see and have used have been 750 CFM or 660 CFM Center Squirters (If you own stock in an oil company).

I'LL bet most of the jet boats you see with tunel rams are basicly stockers. Now by saying "stock" in a jet boat u prolly got decent heads,cam, clearances and improved oiling over a "stock" car motor. I've run two 600 Eddys on a TR on a fairly mild 454, ran and idled great. Now can anyone tell me why i'm running two 1050s on another fairly mild 454?

So is it a stock gen V CAR motor or like a mercruiser Stock BOAT motor?

Ive researched the engine id numbers and nothing came back as a Mercruiser.... so i have to assume its from a car/truck.

Big difference. A stock Mercruiser can have square port heads a steel crank and a stout ( no smog) cam. Your street Stock motor might have half the power..and likely to blow up running like we do in the boats .

Can, but more than likely would not........
Unless the engine from the Mercruiser was a Magnum, it will be a truck motor with brass freeze plugs.
The 330 HP Gen IV 454 has cast pistons, peanut heads, cast crank and a truck camshaft, and a two bolt block basically a crate motor.
Then Gen V wont be much of an improvement.
The Magnums had much better internals.

I dont really know that much about mercruisers but the last one I got for a guy had square ports n shit. I still have the cam. It was comparable to an old 365 hp stick. Now I'm prolly talkin gen IV anyway before they had P-ports.

once again im late.. so i understand running a tr on a stock gen v wont help out much but what about some one with say, aluminum heads big lunati cam (3k-6.5k power band) basset headers and good valve train, i have a 800cfm Holley on a dual plane open plenum intake (pro comp) do u guys think the gains would be worth it to go to a tr and dual 600s?? or maybe just a bigger carb? or are the gains going to be so small its not worth it. ex of what im looking at http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CMB-03-0183/KitComboContents/ (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CMB-03-0183/KitComboContents/) also can u use the same hei dizzy??

You will need to get a new distributor the HEI won't clear, so the cost goes up that much more.
