Dry sump oil system

Got some question on the dry sump oil system when do you decide that dry sump is the way to go at a certain HP ?for endurece  ?how much stuff do you have to .change what are the advantages is it worth doing in your every  day family / river racer and last where do you get all the goods  thanks for any input maybe something I want venture into

Nope, not even worth the huge expense for what you would gain at our level. Only at the highest levels of competition where they look for every last hp and money is no object due to sponsors flipping the bill just to get that much closer to the winner circle. The cost is almost $5,000 to install and plumb a dry sump system to possibly gain 25-40hp. Benefits are only in the very high RPM ranges like 8,500-11,500 like in pro stock where windage can rob hp and creating so many inches of vacuum in the crank case help ring seal and all together are part of a recipe for internal friction reduction. Find another worthwhile place to spend money that would show a larger performance improvement on your boat.

We ran a dry sump in one of the race boats.

There are some pretty dramatic advantages above and beyond the obvious.

A dry sump is a scavenging feed system, this means the oil used to lubricate the motor is literally "sucked" from the motor. It has long been thought that this pulling of the oil form the motor to a ventilated tank help reduce crankcase pressure considerably. While this is somewhat true, it really depends on how large and fast your scavenging pump(s) are.

Another advantage is oil temperature control, since the oil is not allowed to sit in a hot engine block and get the snot whipped out of it by the crankshaft, the temperatures are much cooler than would normally be.

The oil capacity is virtually unlimited with a dry sump.

You can mount the engine much lower in the boat with a dry sump because of the minimalistic pan.

Oil changes are a breeze.





The negatives are the costs, the real estate they eat up, the time it takes to warm the oil up on start up, the potential for a hundred new oil leaks because of all the plumbing, they rely on a belt driven pump.

I'm sure I can go on, but the long story shortened is, you really don't gain all that much when you really boil it down.

They are really cool to look at though.    8)

Exactly! Good stuff right here, not worth the cash. If your looking to gain a few hp's I mite say add a vacuume pump?

A vacuum pump and oil scavenge pump are two different animals. The vacuum pump removed crankcase pressure while the scavenge pump removes the oil from the pan and circulates it into a separate holding tank. You might pick up a few hp but nothing crazy for a mild build or even a big cubic inch deal that is in a family boat. The motor will never run hard enough to justify the pumps. Either one of them

A pan evac simply deals with the crankcase pressure by pulling in the valve covers slightly, or does not really pull a vacuum to the extent where a power gain will be significant.

A vacuum pump actually lowers the crankcase pressure enough to improve the cylinder sealing of the rings to the wall. Plus the back side of the piston is not pushing against the pressure in the crankcase making it move easier downward.

I could have probably explained it better, but the coffee has not totally kicked in yet.

I don't think a dry sump is work it on a boat unless your racing and have tons of money to spare. 5K gets an entry level system or used parts.

The best systems made are Dailey, which is a roots style oil pump. They need to be rebuilt from time to time, require a custom pan, gilmer belt, tons of AN lines (which all the suctions have to be replaced every two years or sooner) and a lot of room.

Also, if the belt breaks you loose oil pressure and even if you shut it down as fast as you can you will need to pull it apart and change bearings as the damage is already done.
