Title: Valve Lash
Post by: HDriderTH on April 22, 2008, 05:23:14 PM
Ok boys, I need some input. I have two BBCs, iron heads and blocks, both have mechanical cams. I have no idea what cams they are. What I'm trying to figure out is what to set the lash at. Any of you guys run flat tappet cam shafts, what do you set the lash at........Jim.....Ralph..........Pops?

who made cam you should be able to call them, most set cold no
oil every where, you can cut old valve cover to catch oil or use oil stop on rockers,

The newer grinds are all tight lash, .018-.022, the older ones are spec'ed at .028 -.035.

With the improvement in valvespring technology, they can grind the ramps steeper, have tighter lash, and let the valvetrain survive.

It's a Chevy, so it probably wants a little tighter. They don't get the pleasure of the Mopar's big ass lifters  ;D

The card typically refers to hot lash, If you are going to set the lash cold Crane recomends adding/subtracting .XXX to what the came card reads:

Iron Block   +   Iron Heads   =  Add .002"
Iron Block    +  Aluminum Heads   =   Subtract .006"
Aluminum Block   +  Aluminum Heads   =  Subtract .012"

That should get you close.

I dont know what cam is in my boat either . A racer from missouri (sp?) told me 26 both and I always get the motor warmed up before any adjustment . Ran good but runs better at 20/22 int/exh.

Nope - what I would call a mild lobe profile would seriously break the chevy. I was just trying to be nice :-)

You should see the grind in my 528 - it pushes the Mopar spec....
