Title: Vertex Magneto
Post by: HaulsBalls on January 12, 2011, 11:18:27 PM
What are the Pro's and Conn's to running a Magneto style ignition?  I have a mag that came off my 460 and want to know if it is worth it to save.

For most applications there is no need for a Magneto.

But, I will be the first to offer the standard SCJB rate of $50.00 for it  ;D

I'll go $51..... :o

I agree, no real need for it, but I happen to have a use for one if youre looking to pawn it off.  >:D

What it's really for is extreme applications and those not using an electical system (Alternator) as they are self charged. Incredible amount of spark power, but require a lot of starting speed to get them going.

I seem to remember a show on one of Jay Leno's old cars that started on a normal points dizzy, then you switch it to a mag from the drivers seat once it started.

The Mag still works but would need a new cap and rotor, should polish out pretty nice too.  I was going to sell it for $175 with a gear/cable drive tach

175 is a good price.  I'm gonna pass because I would probably be strung up for changing it over to a Chevy.  ;)

Ray, your next

I'll change my name to Ray if I can have it for $ 175.

But I wont paint my boat like a farm animal.  >:D

BTW Ray, I dont think that will clear the blower.

Awww c'mon Jeff! You know everyone wants to ride a cow! Look at all the evidence with Rivertard, Skip, Ralph and Omar!   ::)

I think it'll clear with the intake I have. If not, convert it to external coil and I know it will. Remember I'm using the old Weiand 6-71, not the Mooneyham 10-71 on this one.   ;)

PM sent HaulsBalls

Ray

PS, I just happen to have 2 NIB Mallory Comp 9000 Mechanical advance Unilites for BBF I have no use for.............They don't make 'em anymore.........

I wasnt worried about it hitting the blower as much as it being to tall and hitting the drive snout.  Maybe, with an intercooler or spacer.   If it is a problem, Paul has offset mag drives for them that moves them out from under the snout (there only $ 1750).  ;D

edit, edit, edit,          Nawww,  I'm not goin there, its just to easy.   :o ;D

LOL! Spacer, maybe. We'll see. I think it'll be OK on the snout, honestly. with a flat cap. Definately has to be installed and right the first time before the blower, lol.

Anyone need a pretty fresh Vertex SBC/BBC mag? Just happen to have one laying around!  ;)  A few other BBC blower parts as well if I can remember and find them all........... :screwy:

Hope it works for you Ray, rather it get used somewhere than sit in my garage. I believe the crank to tach pulley is 1:1 but I will measure it and get back to you.

what the hell is that? a belt drive for the tach drive?

ray, if youre interested in parting with the tach and cable, let me know. i'm looking for one for the race boat. its got a built in drive in the mag i am running.

That's exactly what it is! Can't say I've ever seen one before, but it's a SW piece. I'll keep you in mind on that B-Rad, got a couple ideas though.
