Title: water cooled oil pan
Post by: hotrod56cars on March 25, 2008, 03:58:14 PM
[attachimg=#]  I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing... but I can tell you it's an old school way of doing things. Water cooled oil pan, has tubes running around the inside of the oil pan that are fed by the water pump (v-drive), looks like it took some time to make.

You can see where the cooling lines hook up at.

This oil pan has a huge AN oil plug on it, the hole is probably ? 3/4". I emptied about 3 1/2 gallons of water out the drain plug and that's all that came out. So I removed the oil pan and BAM at least 8 quarts of very old sludgey oil all over me, my tools, my hot rod, and my garage floor. Took me hours to clean it all up. When dissassembling an eninge that's been together for a long time stick a screwdriver or something into the oil pan's drain hole and break up the sludge that's sitting in there.  [attachimg=#]

I think most of our pans sit in an inch or two of water, very good heat sink...

good point HD... That is an interesting idea though.

Holy shit, I haven't run for 3 years. Just got back, ran almost 3 miles with the dog that some of you met at Ming and now my leg is completely cramped.

hook a hose up to it and see if it leaks

Yea, the tubes may be fine. I didn't have that oil cooling system, but the 383 I pulled apart had an inch of gunk above the windage tray and 2 in the pan below  :o
