water in my distrubutor cap
« on: June 08, 2007, 06:07:31 PM »
I keep getting water in my distributor cap. I cant figure out how it is getting there. No water in my oil so I dont think it is a head gasket, or is it? Can I have a leak that brings water into my distributor without getting in my oil? 454 in a 1974 Eliminator. Any guesses are welcomed.

Most marine distributors have a drain hole in the bottom. If you wanted to i don't see why you couldent drill a couple of small ones.

The WD in WD-40 stands for water displacement .

Two suggestions:

1) Stop hitting reverse so hard and blowing water up over the transom
2) Cover your boat when it rains

Yea, I think so. I'd tear that Dist apart, clean it out and run it. Maybe an accumulation sitting down below. You dont have any header water spray right there do ya?

WD-40 is the trademark of a widely used penetrating oil (cleaner, lubricant and anti-corrosive solution) spray. It was developed in 1953 by Norm Larsen (then working for the Rocket Chemical Company) to eliminate water and prevent corrosion on electrical circuitry. It also has many household uses.

WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement, 40th attempt", a name which came from Larsen's laboratory notebook. Larsen was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion by displacing water, and arrived at the formula on his 40th try.[1] A common myth is that "WD" stands for "war department".

It was first used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. The product first became commercially available on store shelves in San Diego in 1958.

Ok I found the culprit. But , I dont back up hardly at all and my bat is a daycruiser so LOTS of freeboard(no water over the transom. The water was getting in while I was driving it. No water in the oil so I had ruled out the head gasket, however after having my wife drive while I watched the engine I found a leak between my heads and the block right at the seam in the way back. It only leaks at full tilt but sounds liek time for a new gasket. I guess that while i have her off its time for rebuilding the heads. Anyone out there know where I can get some aluminum heads for a reasonable price? BBC 454
