too much oil pressure
« on: June 27, 2013, 08:04:42 PM »
I Recently swapped in a sbc that I had originally built and used in a car. Had about 10k when crashed! Oil pressure was always a constant 60 ish, before installing in the boat I changed to a stocl but chrome pan and now at idle my oil psi is at 75 at idle and 90 when mashed on the peddle therefore blowing oil out of everywhere and causing leaks. Maybe my oil pump went bad and isn't regulating the oil right?  Any ideas?

First, IMHO, your problem is probably not too much oil pressure, although it does seem odd that there is an increase.

Your problem sounds like a textbook crankcase pressure issue.

When you say "blowing oil out everywhere", what does that mean?

The ONLY place too much oil pressure can cause excessive oil leakage on an SBC is the oil pressure sending unit, the galley plugs in the rear of the motor, the rear cam plug  and the oil filter. There is literally no pressurized oil anywhere else.

Crankcase pressure on the other hand will push out oil where oil does not even belong....
