Engine break in oil psi

Fired up my BBC last night. Breaking in the cam. I fluctuated RPMs gradually between 2000-2500 for just over 20 mins. Oil psi remained at 80. What gives? 454 BBC. Electric gauge. Havent tried a manual yet. Oil psi was normal prior to previous engine issue. Gauge was working fine. So I am ASSUMING gauge is still working one month later.

  Not sure what the problem is a lot of them run around that.

I was thinking could be high due to assembly lube mixed with oil. Maybe it will be normal once I change the oil. I am running Valvoline 15-40 Diesel oil. With break-in additive. Recommended by machine shop.

  Relax your fine just go have fun with it.  The first ten minutes I run my boat the gauge is pegged then it will stay around 80 psi.  If I make a couple hard NOS passes it will drop to 60 for a couple minutes then right back to 80 psi. I do understand that your gun shy now but your oil pressure is fine.  GT may bust me up on this as I know he prefers the lower oil pressures.  :thumbup:

Here is the loaded question of the day.

Is it an 80 pound gauge?

If so, I would replace the gauge and sender to a 100#.

The reason I don't care for extreme oil pressure is the load it puts on the cam gear as far as rearward thrust. I normally cut the cam gear thrust area in the block and install a thrust washer and a Torrington bearing just for this reason. At minimum, we will use a Cloyes thrust washer and drill a 1/64th hole to the oil passage to feed it. Probably all over kill,  but having a cam get yanked through the front of the block makes a person gun shy.

It was 80 psi during the entire break in process.

I reused my oil pump from my previous build which was nearly brand new. Readings were normal. New engine has same specs as previous engine. Only difference is cam and all new valve train. New bearings and rings too. But same parts. Oil oump was cleaned by machine shop before installed. I witnessed it.

. Your getting me nervous now......so what was the oil pressure last time?  The internals or the damage to the internals plays a big role. Have a shot or two of whiskey and it will all be fine.

Previous engine was normal. 60 at higher RPM. 40 while cruising. I reused the same oil pump.

Grab a mechanical gauge and dig further.

It wouldn't shock me to see 80, but something seems off .

The oil pressure is determined by flow and clearances, not necessarily the oil pump. Short of hitting the bypass that is.

Will do tonight. I wasnt shocked at 80 either. It was the fact that it stayed their throught the break in. I should have dropped a little. Should be more like 60 once warmed up. Right? Even at 2000 rpms after 20 min of run time the reading was 80. Thanks.

If I read his post right? He did say they put new bearings in right? Might have tightened the clearances up enough to raise the pressure with the same pump? Just thinking out loud here?

I dont remember. But I dont think so. In the previous engine it ran 60 psi cold then down to just under 40 warmed up around 1000 rpms. Above 40 psi while cruising. And just under 60 at WOT 4750 RPMS. I am using the same pump.... but I spoke to machine shop who did the work. He says run it.

I'd keep am eye on the oil psi. Mine runs around 75-80 most of the time. If i beat on it for longer than normal WOT runs, I'll see about 65-68. Haven't had any issues
