Title: Water Injected Vs Water Jacketed
Post by: juststabit on May 19, 2010, 12:21:32 PM
What's the difference between the water injected headers compared to the water jacketed headers? Applications being used in open engine compartments compared to closed engine compartments. I have a closed compartment with through transom exhaust (stock risers), but was wondering what will be an upgrade I could make without having to spend a ton of money (yeah right). :screwy:

Seems like the price difference from some Bassett TT headers compared to Lightning TT headers is huge. Then again, the Bassett website says that they cannot be used in a closed compartment...

Thanks guys.

Welcome to my world  :banghead:   You are in the same boat so to speak as me.
Headers needed, enclosed engine compartment restricted and money short  ;D

I'll be watching this post to see if anyone has figured out great flow without
burning up the boat  ::)

if budget is what you are looking for then look for a set of midrisers! better then logs, and cheaper then headers! water injected are just like over transom headers...they have a jet so to speak at the bottom of the headers that mist water into the pipes! also water injected thru transom have a water port near the collector to keep the rubber hose that goes to your transom from burning up...water jacketed headers basically have a "jacket" around the header that pumps water..."just like a log" it keeps cooler water surrounded around the pipe to keep it somewhat cool...water injected thru transom headers although quieter then overtransom headers run roughly the same temp as over transom...where the water jacketed headers run much cooler!

atleast this is what i gather from online research

now midrisers are built similar to log exhaust...however mid risers eliminate the snail that needs to hang on the end of the log to try and prevent water from entering the cylinders....the mid risers are going to have less restricting exhaust flow

correct me if i am wrong, but this is what i have gathered over the years...if im not mistaken i just came accross a set of midrisers for a 460...they are fairly difficult to come accross vs the bbc

Nordie is correct on that, water injected headers have no water running through them at idle(at least there not supposed to) where as the water jacketed headers are a header in a header so they run water through them at all times. Matt

Thanks for the info guys. So if I'm understanding this correctly, the biggest difference is that the water jacketed (header inside of a header) is constantly running a flow of water that keeps them a lot cooler and safer in a closed engine compartment. The water injected only runs a small amount of water through them, which means hotter temps that rely on an open compartment to maintain safe with better airflow.... think I got it  ;D

Here is what's on the boat now.

honestly i would leave those on there, because people who have these

would really like to have these

because these are $$$$$

Thanks. Now I owe you a few of these

Someone needs to make a great flowing enclosed engine compartment exhaust
that will work with tall valve covers.    Oh, and less than $2,000.00 bucks!
OH OH and we wanted them YESTERDAY   ;D

LOL! What is it Ralph says, Cheap, fast, reliable, pick 2............

Honestly, I think you'd be hard pressed to beat those center risers. Yeah, the jacketed headers will do it, but is the HP worth the cost in this case? You can probably find more power in the engine cheaper elsewhere.

'sides, polished logs and snails are goin for $500 around here I'm told  :screwy: . Who knows what your center risers are worth...... ;D

The problem with the center risers is that they don't clear tall valve covers.   I'd rather have the
solid valve train than the center riser.    They might cost me a little flow but I won't have to
paddle home  ;D

I have to wonder in the 5,000 rpm range how much logs and center risers cost in HP.   I know I'd really
be worried if we were talking 6500 + rpm's,  No not worried PANICED!

It would be nice to know flow numbers for the different brand logs and center riser manifolds.  I never read of any testing done.

We just went through this problem with the Lavey Craft. The Lighting headers hit the tall valve covers, so we put 1 inch spacers to kick them out and they still hit.  :banghead: So a set EMI were installed but they hit the valve cover also. So....... we used the slanted outdrive covers and presto. We got the valve covers from Dana Marine and they clear the stud girdles and rollers. The Lighting headers also hit the stringers so that also is the reason they were not used. Matt

What engine?  Ford or Chebby?

It's a shame to spend $$$ on a good valve train then clog it up back with an old log manifold. I used Drake aluminum jacketed with a shortened OT tail piece that dumped the jacket water out the tip. cleared the valve covers (tall Morosos) and worked about as well as dry stacks at the time.

Could you send me a web site?  Trust me, the logs aren't on there because I WANT
them there.  We are looking for an alternative that I can afford.

I have some center risers for sale for a 460 . They do require a shorter valve cover .
