Water Plumbing Ideas Needed
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:25:05 AM »
Ok, I'm building another project and need some water plumbing ideas.  It's a SBC and I'll be running dry headers.  Is a thermostat a good idea.  Any photos would be most welcomed.

I have a bad ass set up. Im running dry pipes to. Ill post pics or try to tonight. a very $$ set up tho. I went with a offshore style set up and it is the best way to go my opinion. that is if you going with a big hp big $$ motor.

Depends on how the motor is built to tell you whether or not to run a stat.

IMHO, not knowing what tolerances the internals are, I would say a stat would definately not "hurt anything". I would say a 160*F stat and keep the flow good would be great.

The biggest problem with headers is the lack of the ability to "preheat" the water, this cause issues with even temps across the entire block/heads...

Now if it was mine, I would do a rear water outlet setup, or have the entering water go in through the drain holes in the block.. It works good both ways..

I think a stat is a good idea, but from what I've seen for the plumbing, it looks like the flow defeats the purpose.

The biggest problem with headers is the lack of the ability to "preheat" the water, this cause issues with even temps across the entire block/heads...

The headers are running dry and are ceramic coated.  So, I guess water flow through the block is very important.

Now if it was mine, I would do a rear water outlet setup, or have the entering water go in through the drain holes in the block.. It works good both ways..

Now I don't have a clue what you are talking about.  :D

Got a 16' Tahiti that I'll be working.  Putting Tom's 383 Stroker motor in it with a Berkeley JG pump with a droop and Place Diverter on on it.  I'll get some photos of the thing as I picked it up and the trailer ( ???) I towed it home with as soon as I get them taken.  This is going to be a long term project...  I think.   ;)  How are you doing and what are you doing?

Now I don't have a clue what you are talking about.  :D

If the water enters the front of the engine and exits from the front of the engine...How do you keep the rear half of the block as cool as the front when the water going in the front of the motor is only say 60*F?

A car has the advantage of the entire system being at the same/similar temps... :sly:

So it would stand as an argument to have either the water enter from the middle, or, have the water exit at the opposite end that it goes in... ;)

Otherwise, let some water out of all four corners...

I think Glenn is suggesting tapping into the water jackets at the front and/or rear of the cylinder heads like the old schoolers used to do when mounting blowers to Small Block Chebbies using low profile intake manifolds (Some still do this).

And sounds like a great idea to me, in theory. I personally would induce the water at the front water inlets where the pump would normally go, as normal, then the 4 outlets front and rear of both heads have ball valves on them and temp gauges at least for test purposes to get everything regulated and even temps on all outlets.

If you have the fortitude and time to do this, sounds almost killer in a jet boat situation!

Greg, looks like you're getting some great ideas here.  So my question is...What would you do with the gooseneck (t-stat) area?  Block it off?
