Title: what 427 BBC is this, have block numbers
Post by: freshmeat on October 03, 2014, 07:41:54 PM
I may have found a 427 to buy, can you fellas help me identify what 427 this is. Here are the numbers I got off the block.
Back of block numbers are 3916323
Front of block are two sets of numbers on passenger side of block, here they are. T1017ED and then 18K124384
On the back of the block it also says HI-Perf Truck Pass.

Just ran some numbers, its not a  427 its a 396. The guy wanting to sell it tells me its a 427 but he wasn't sure.

Looking at the block casting numbers givin, that block is in fact a 1968 396 2-bolt main, perhaps this block was used in a truck application too. There is actually no difference in a 427 and a 454 block, both bores are 4.250, that 396 factory bore dia. is 4.094. If your wanting to build a nice boat engine on a fair budget, try and find yourself a nice OEM 4 bolt 454 block, cut it .030 or .060, a nice GM steel crank will do fine too, or a nice aftermarket 4340 is nice also. GM 3/8 steel rods with ARP bolts and a set of forged pistons will also do fine. Everything depends on how much power you want to make and how fat your wallet is...LOL

I for the life of me can't wrap my head around why people always dismiss the 2 bolt main 454 blocks....
On the other hand, if ANYONE finds a good 454 2 bolt block, send it my way!

I agree with you Omar. For a mild build there's nothing wrong with a 2 bolt block. I've been told 600hp would be fine, but then again i have three 4 bolt blocks for future builds. Haha

Tell me about it. The two bolt block is actually stronger than a four bolt.  I have done the splayed conversions and believe them to be superior in strength to the four bolt.  Never seen a two bolt block fail.  Nor has anyone else that I know. That being said, they must be studded to be fool proof.

The 454 that I have now in my sleek is a 2 bolt main. Seems to run perfect.
