Wire size?
« on: October 02, 2014, 05:49:56 PM »
What wire size from battery to key switch then from key switch to solenoid? I'm using 12 ga for both.

Depends on how much chit you are running electrical wise... I normally use 10ga.

I use #8 from the battery (use a breaker) to a fuse block behind the dash. From there, I run a wire off a 20-amp fuse to the switch, then on to the solenoid. I use #12 for that run. #8 gives plenty of ampacity for stereo, ignition, lights, bilge, and accessory circuits.

BTW, I'm sure the 20-amp fuse is overkill for the solenoid, but I'm actually trying to protect the wire, not so much the solenoid.

Just the basics. No stereo at the moment

For just a straight up, basic run, you'll be just fine with #12. Just be sure to slap in an inline 20-amp fuse. If you use that run for anything more, go with a #10. Every boat I've bought, I've rewired/harnessed completely. It's amazing how many times I've torn out unfused circuits. Found some pretty crispy wires in the process. Good luck, man.
