Amp meter to volt meter wiring
« on: June 24, 2016, 07:33:08 PM »
I'm a bit stumped here trying to wire up the new volt gauge from amp meter.  With the key in "off" it reads 12.5v with the key on it goes to 0. Is this correct?  I wired it back up the same way the amp meter was but something tells me I have to change something around ?  Have not tried to fire it up there is no crank from the starter now? To the ignition side of the gauge is a thicker red wire to the "signal " aide there is a smaller guage res wire with a thick orange one that comes straight off the back of the alt.

I just went through all of this on my float. You can ruin that volt gauge if you don't change the wiring. Cpperformance has amp gauges on clearance right now for $9.99. I ended up going that route cause I like to see how much the alternator is charging. Anyhow, below is a pic that helped me. Not too difficult to change it to volt.

Get rid of the red wire going from the gauge to the alternator and replace with a ground wire. Alls the volt gauge needs is a wire that is hot when the ignition is on (purple) and a ground(black)

Wow that makes sense it still works but now explains why everything was not functioning.  I will try to Rewire everything like that diagram and give it a whirl.  Hopefully that should get me sorted thanks!

So basically tap another purple , let's say from the other gauges to the volt meter and a ground and it should be set?  And re connect all the other 3 wires together with a nut and bolt and possibly heat shrink them.

You should actually join the two wires  (orange and red) back near the engine.

Eliminates a bunch of voltage drop. You can use the red wire for dash and accessory power.

Gt if you are running amp meter and 1979 wires is there anyway to avoid voltage drop. Tired of intermittent click no start.

Seems to fire up fine like normal
But noticed the voltage was a tad low 13s is that normal or is it possible my alternator is headed south.

Sounds normal, did you confirm voltage at battery with ohm meter or just reading new guage.
