The boat is a 16' v-drive, bassetts, victor intake, pretty much stock motor. just want to catch the end of the summer! the lobes on the stock cam are bad.

Looks like a BBC. Many will have their opinion, probably better than mine, but I would look seriously at the Comp Cams 268H or mabe the 284H if you feel brave on a stock bottom end. Maybe even less, but I take chances and can afford to rebuild my idiotic mistakes.
Problems going above the stock style cam is more on the valvesprings, retainers, studs, and locks than anything else, so proceed with caution on that note.
Did many a cam "Upgrade" back in the day for friends on cars only to be redoing heads and complete engines a year or so later, so keep that in mind.
You can upgrade a "tad" or two, with a completely stock engine and be OK, beyond that, you really need to focus on what you want to acheive, choose a cam that does just that for you, based on HP and Torque curves they advertise, then build the engine to support it.
On a BBC, very cheap and easy to do, as parts are everywhere and inexpensive, and machine work is common knowledge at ANY reputable shop.

Looks to me like the engine is in a truck :sly: Sooooo why not build it right to begin with? Crewcheif rebuilt his, for the second time, in like 2 weeks!

funds are limited!! I looked on summit and they have their grinds w/lifters, at half the cost, but I have gotten used to walking in to stores for certain items. This is MY first v-drive build. I have done many Merc, volvo,and indmar warantee repairs and replacements over the years. I should have a house with a garage in a couple of months, then I can spend the money and do it right! I usually build my BBF's 460s for 6000 rpm to be safe. But this is a 16' v-drive, so I dont know what to shoot for.
