Post by: BFFted on July 27, 2011, 06:54:38 PM
Hey guys i am building a new engine for my boat. ITs a Ford 390 board 30 0ver. Heads have ben worked over hardened seats new valves. I herd jet pumps like tork so what is a good camshft choice a hot rv type?   The boat is a 16 foot Tahiti stock pump and impeller. The engine i have now is a pretty stock engine and i would like to break 50 mph. It will do 47.5 mph at  7000 ft elevation any ideas Ted

ok the best anwser you will get out of anyone is , to call and talk to the tech dept of the manufacture of the brand of cam you want.they should ask all the right questions to sell you the right cam. and do your self the favor of buying lifters with your cam. dont go cheep.you dont have to break the bank, but good luck!

The cam should be the baseline for all of your other accessories (Intake manifold, Exhaust: headers/logs, cylinder head modifications...).

Depending on what you already have for parts and how you plan on using the boat will give you some direction on what cam you will be happy with.

You also want to match the valve springs to the cam and have a qualified machine shop make sure everything is going to work properly.

In other words, we need more information about what you have before anyone here should give a recommendation.

theres really alot! the gas you want to run, ok the best way is to make a list of what you really want out of it.  the big one is the rpm range you want. think of the cam as your computer in a newer car. it will tell the engine how to run. just really very basic. in its idea. but you  pick the wrong one and youll never be happy.get a couple of cam books and look at whats available they give you an idea of how each cam runs IE rpm range / what is needed for carb and intake/ and your compresion. go from there.

That's where it starts........... and then all downhill from there! :banghead:     And before you know it, you will be building a blower or twin turbo motor!!  LOL
