Title: What did i do wrong
Post by: 2savage4you on April 30, 2009, 01:42:19 PM
When i started the carribean the fuel gauge went to 15-20psi instantly...
With this pump.
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd269%2F2savage4you%2F003-4.jpg&hash=0d50d1abbab3cc29f6a9ee1cf38de07cc81d033b)
So i figured it was a hi volume pump and swapped it out with a 8 psi from Jegs.
This one. ( exact copy of a Holley )
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd269%2F2savage4you%2F007-1.jpg&hash=b3bac82fe8277dbbec1dca703994f84c10bedd19)
Just got all my parts to finish up my fuel line and tried to start her...

If i pump the carb it will idle till it runs out of gas , and now im showing NO FUEL pressure at all ???

Now the other pump , bump the key and it sat their and ran flawlessly. But showed hi psi ???

Is my gauge f-up......

I cracked the fuel lines and their is fuel in them , but for some reason the carb is acting like its not getting enough fuel...

Now the guy that i bought this carb from said it needed to have 10psi at all times to run, but i didn't believe him i thought that was a little high....

I also installed a inline fuel filter , it has a flat screen for the filter... Now if i installed it backwards would that block the flow ???
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd269%2F2savage4you%2F001-4.jpg&hash=71b06e6e215a16b060594ec1c34435653b070a35)

I wouldn't think so but if thats my problem i would be happy mo fo....

Any suggestions :sly:

If its a flat screen filter then it shouldnt block the flow b/c there is no pressure valve to open or close.  Maybe the fuel pressure gauge is bad.  You said it ran good with the high pressure pump but when you switched the 8psi pump it act's like its starving and dies?  Sounds to me like the pressure gauge is the problem.  but wtf do i know    ???

I was thinking i needed to prime it better but after twenty min of playing with it , i give up...... I know i have about 5gal per tank of race fuel so that should be enough to prime it. I think i will go fill both tanks just because.. if that dont work , off comes the new pump and back to square one :banghead:

If i could only find a Barry grant BBC mech pump, but everywhere i look they are out

jegs has the BG 9 psi but not instock or anytime soon.

I also have a water fuel seperator that i disconnected to add the new line to....... ???

Pull the plug just under the pump to see if pump arm is under push rod

Can't i tried when i was installing the pump......

I greased the push rod so it would stay up in the block long enough for me to get the pump in there.

Im starting to think its my fuel water sep... Maybe its got air in it.. Whats that plastic thingy on the bottom of the filter ???

Great point Terry!
Might be the SBC pump.

You know Steve, I had the exact same problem when I first bought the boat.
It would just flood the shit out of the carb and wondered how the hell did they think they had it set up correctly  ???
Fuel pressure regulator went on and the fuel pressure always stayed where ever I put it (8 psi BTW)
I think by trying to simplify your life, your complicating it.
Slap the pump that you know works, along with a regulator and enjoy the rest of the day.
That motor has a little more "performance" than you think.
Just a little confused why your working in this direction.  ???

I thought about a reg ,  but having a new reg and a used pump didnt appeal to me, so i thought i would just make it as simple as i can and go with a new pump.

I will probably end up sending this back to Summit..... and get a reg..... You know me , always over thinking shit!!!!

Im going out to try an old trick. disconnect the fuel line from the pump and put air in the tank and if i have a good flow...... Pumps trash :sly:

OK i shot a quick shot into the tank and a gallon of race fuel came out , whoops.............. Man i love that smell ;D

So i think the pump is el trashooo :sly:

Here we go again  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  :sly:

Just a dumb thought, but are you 100% sure you hooked up the inlet and outlet right on the new pump (might be backwards from the old one).  :-\

 Hmmm, whoda thunk it.

Let me guess, you hooked it up like this, right?   ::)

IN = is the input to the carb

OUT = is the out from the tanks

Did you unhook the line from the carb and try to pump "gas"  into a milk carton?

Remember  "grass hopper"  new parts can be junk too.   They are just shinier   ;D

I forget who said that....   ;D

I think 2Sav is on the right track. The summit pump was junk (Go figure, lol), and so is his guage, (which, and correct me if I'm wrong Steve, came from Jeg;s or Summit as well?).

My opinion, which is like assholes, everyone has one, I think you were getting false readings in the first place. I'm gonna peruse your posts to see where you installed the guage, but I would assume a faulty guage. No Way a mechanical can produce that (Short of a custom deal).

Yeah, maybe a Nascar pump, but c'mon, Mine works O/T to do 7 psi with two carbs and mine is a race Pump!

Steve, I would do this. And this is just me as I'm in retail and given todays economy. Call Summit and tell them their pump is junk (be an asshole, I know you can). They'll offer to replace it, but you don't want that Chinese junk. And i'd tell them just that, then ask for a manager. Then ask for HIS boss. Keep bitching (I know you can) until you get what you want. I guarantee you can get a good pump for free and over nited. (I would push for a new guage too, as that seems to be the root of all the evil)

Just me, and everyone, do NOT come into my store this way, I'm smarter than that, lol

Ray,  If someone called or came into my shop with this attitude they would get the bare minimum and nothing more.  If someone called and explained what was going on and asked if I could help, I would bend over backwards (for what I can anymore) to get them helped.  I have a customer currently that we had installed a new sway bar and the frame brackets went missing (bolts left loose or over-torqued on install).  I shipped her the new parts and she gave me the number of a mobile guy near her, I called and arranged for them to do the work and bill my shop.

                                        Pissy attitude = no advantage

Exactly- My granddad always told me that you'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Remember this, you get what you give.

Although I read down thru the middle of this Steve the key here (assuming I read right ) might be race gas ? I had two "summit pumps" fail in short order on the Schiada the valving (little internal neopreme flaps) seemed to be crazed by the fuel itself Tom

if someone comes into the dealership with a shit attitude they get shit from me, i did not manufacture the part or break the part so don't take it out on me, i will fix the problem, but treat me with the respect i deserve,  i had a counter man that anytime someone started yelling at him he would step back, stop them, tell them that yellilng at him is in no way helping their chances of getting what they wanted and he would return to help them in a couple minutes after they calmed down, and he would walk away, their jaws would hit the floor.  he would come back in about 30 seconds and start the conversation over and every time the customer had a totally different attitude and the counterman would bend over backwards to accomadate them and everytime that client returned regardless of what was going on they would see him and smile and say thanks.    treat everyone as you want to be treated

people who have an attitude, will get a "attitude tickets."   like forkedup said, treat everyone as you would like to be treated.  btw, the regulator should fix the problem.  just run a gauge on the fuel rail, to get an accurate reading.  i have my gauge on the rail and it looks fine and i can clearly see it.  ;D

Sorry guys, wasn't advocating that behaviour, It's just what I see other stores doing and other members of my own management team. They're afraid of confrontation. I, personally, always get taken care of pretty easily, and never have to resort to that. Half of what I said was tongue in cheek, there is a nice and polite way to bitch,  ;D
