oil press probs

so out at the avi i started to loose oil pressure so here's the deal, 502 with flat tops, tfs streets solid roller jomar girdle c9 block scat internals je pistons victor man 1150 carb high flow dynamics stage one pump with two shims. armondo's oil pan pick up is 3/8 off the bottom mains at .003 rods .025. just had the pan off two weeks ago to shim the pump up to two shims from one. pulled a couple off rod caps off and those bearings looked fine so back together. oh yeah valvoling 20-50 racing oil.

when i built this engine it had 75 psi cold and 50 hot oil temp 230. just last weekend 50 cold and 28 hot at 5k after a 3 mile run. i have 2 guages on it and the one off the back reads 28 and the one by the fuel pump reads 35. both guages are auto meter mechanical. when i let it sit after the run it goes back up to 35 psi. what gives just need some ideas, the engine is coming apart this weekend.

ok i took this thing apart and found nothing,zero,zip,nada, so i did'nt know what else to do other than put in new bearings and an oil pump even though i measured the old bearings and the clearances were .0030 and .0025 give or take .0001-2 i took the oil pump apart and found nothing out of the ordinary.

changes i made are as follows new bearings rod/crank, new oil pump, gasket between pump and block, switched to straight vr50 oil, k&n shortie filter that is now on the block as opposed to going through my oil cooler and to the remote.

the oil pressure is now 85psi cold at idle. i let it idle until the oil temp was 160 degrees then brought it up to time it and my pressure was 93psi at 3k rpm. I will now start to back track by putting my oil cooler and remote filter with the fl-1a back on, then go back to the 20/50 oil. i will make these changes one at a time and see what happens, i dont know if i will ever find out what the actual problem was, but at least now i have a safe baseline to start with. Any idea's are appreciated, if you need more info let me know.

i finally got some time to work on it so here's what i found. i hooked up the oil cooler and remote then started it and only had 40psi cold, then bypassed the cooler and back up to 80psi on the front port and 70 off the back port. so in conclusion the cooler for some reason is causing the pressure loss. I did not have time to inspect the cooler yet but i will this weekend, as well as go to the fl1-hp filter. Any more ideas?

this is the offending oil cooler, i dont want to place blame on the cooler and not on the pump being able to keep up, i'm just not sure ???



I nor my pops are by no means engine guru's but we try to do stuff ourselvs for the love of being a gearhead's and the oportunity to learn about the engine we love so much (460). sometimes its frusterating and expensive but when you truly ejoy working on your own shit as we do i just dont see any other way.

i dont know if this will fix your problems but if you learn from my experience/frusteration all the better. thats what this forum is all about. any input is greatly appreciated.

Sorry but I don't have any idea's.

Just wanted to say THANKS! for taking the time to type this post up and keep us posted as I'm sure you will. Really weird that the oil cooler is the culprit on loosing oil pressure.  ???

Same problem with my 455. pulled it last nite,we'll see if I get anything done.

PS no oil cooler...high oil temps ,oil press to 10lbs :P    not good

dont know yet, might be that the pump cant keep the volume, theres a lot of line to go through

My boat used to do that when I ran variable weight oil in it . Went to straight 50 and its all good now . You'd never notice the power absorbed by the oil in your motor . Could be the pump isnt up to the challenge of that much line as you stated . Quite the tickler . ???
