I'm replacing the starter in my boat and it has a BBC. Nobody around here knows what this starter is. I had to pull the motor to replace but nobody how to look up this. Does anyone know what this might be from? It bolts to housing around flex plate from engine side.

3 bolt flange? similar to a top mount starter?
60-63 Chevy truck, 4 speed, bell housing mount starter.

Oh I forgot picture....
-
Yes 3 bolt flange only 2 bolts used

Here is a pic of the starter. Not saying much for auto zone but there computers were stumped. Not surprised, I am surprised they didn't ask if that has a/c or power steering....

Where can you get those top mounts? Mine is on the way out.
Life is uncertain. Don't sip.

I think a true top mount started turns opposite of the lower mount ones
-
Yeah it does and I kinda like the way mine looks. My motor plate can accept a regular starter as well but I like the top mount and haven't been able to find one.

They probably used them from '55 to about '62 or '63...3 speed and 4 speed...283, 307, 327...168t flywheel... probably the same one as you have.

I have 1 or 2 under the bench...(cores)

Thank you for the info. I will go check with them and tell them that and see what they come up with
Thanks

Its cool for jumping in. That just means 2 of us go helped out for the price of one :)

The 3-bolt flange is similar to top mount, HOWEVER, a top mount starter is reverse rotation. The armature is splined reverse, and the field is polarized backwards vs a 3 bolt flanged 'truck' starter. the 'throw' of the pinion gear is about .100" to .150" longer too.
If I remember right, look for a 'top mount prestolite' starter.
