so ive had my boat for about 6 or 7 months and i have changed my oil once and its time to do it again. The guy who had it before me used 20/50,its a 454 and i have a 6qt pan is that a good weight to run in big block?
-
if it aint broke dont try to fix it :-\
-
I run 20/50 Valvoline VR1 racing oil. Works great never had any problems.
-
sweet thats what i ve been running i guess ill stick with it
-
I've been running Chevron Delo 15w40 and it seems to be working good so far....
But, I agree with "if it works, don't change it"... unless you know you can make it work better ;)
-
Yeah I agree with Ralph on that too. Learned my lessons too many times trying too make something better, when nothing was wrong with it. Just run into bigger problems.
-
I run lucas sythetic 20/50 with high zinc...last motor was vr1
-
X2 one the Delo 400, or 20/50 valvoline

with the way boats run, i'd change out the pan. i now use vr1 20w50. a few years ago, i didnt change the oil all season and paid for it at the end by having a rebuild the motor. :banghead:
-
do you think if i change my oil every 5 or 6 times i take my boat out, i need to change my pan? every time i take my boat out i have to add a 1/2 to full qt, well i dont know now cause i tightened up my oil pan bolts so i might no be loosing as much oil,i got about a half turn on each one, didnt wanna tighten them any more i got scared. oil pans are $$$$$$
-
a proper oil pan will save your motor from running out of oil and its a cheap investment. if your burning oil, that is something that should be looked into. adding 1/2-1 quart everytime you go out is not a good sign. if your oil pressure is between 40-70 psi, then obviously your getting oil pressure. if it aint broke, you "dont" gotta fix it, yet. if it runs good and your getting good oil pressure, than you could leave it the way it is. good oil pans are usually in the $250-500 range, compared to the cool chrome oils pans at autozone for $40 bucks. whatever works.
-
I guess this might just be me, but im running dual filters....in my eyes thats atleast an extra quart in the oil system....10 quart pan, i run 9 with dual filters....also please make sure to avoid fram filters...even vato zone and oriely sells other filters and are close to the same price....pep boys stocks purolater as well
-
my oil pressure is fine and boat runs great and i do have a fram filter but i havent noticed any oil leaking from it so im not gunna fix it cause it's not broke ;D

change the fram filter to a wix, napa black (same manufacture)
-
ralph saved the day again ill try that
-
Whats the deal with the Fram Filters? ??? I have run those on my work trucks without a problem. Are they known for leaking? Are they just a crappy filter?
-
Crappy filters...and they can blow apart....i use wix, purolator, or k&n
-
my fram holds well at 85 lbs of oil pressure. ;D
-
AC and Motorcraft oil filters are avail at checkerzone, way better than Fram, Imo
$3 filter for a $3 motor?? :screwy:
Daniel
Mash on it
-
one thing i noticed is when i used a k&n oil filter, the oil pressure was higher. guessing it was a bit more restrictive than the frams ive used. if i had no oil pressure, theres a good chance i wont be starting the motor, so no chance of ruining the motor. :sly:
$3 dollar filter for a $3 dollar motor? frams are about $5 bucks, so i guess i have a $5 dollar motor? i think not. i just supply the parts and my buddy hooks me up with all labor. ;D
-
i have a 5 dollar motor to but ill sell it to u for 3500 ;D
