I have a 429 i believe, not a 460 but I dont know if it matters.im trying to set the timing and do not know what to set it at. id like the best performance on 91 octane. ITs basically stock with a mild cam, performer intake, mallory dual points converted with pertronics, and a holley 750dp. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Exactly what heads do you have and what is your compression ratio?

Thanks for the quick answers! ;D i have d3ve a2a heads and unless it has different pistons, which i dont know of yet, it should be what the stock compression is. Think i was told somewhere around 8 to 1 i believe. And yes, i have a dail back time light. i havent timed it yet or checked where it is at.i just got the boat,replaced the pump,then painted it, and then did the interior. The motor started when i got it and sounded fine so im getting to it now. and since were are talking about heads, i have dove c heads sittin in my garage with all valve train. can i just bolt them on or would i need new pushrods? or better yet how much do you think i can get for dove c heads? ive had the boat for 2 months and i just want to get on the water! If it is a 429 and not a 460 and it has never been apart, then you have a 1973 429...which has about 7.25:1 compression ratio. Assuming that's the case, then Ralph is on target in that 36* BTDC@3000 (<---max) will work as long as you are running good 91 octane fuel.
If you have a 460 (way more likely since 1973 is the only 429 with D3VE heads while 460s used them for about 12 years), then back the timing down by a degree or two...once again assuming a bone stock engine.
D0VE heads on a bone-stock 1973 429 will bump compression ratio to about 8.4:1...set timing at 33* BTDC @ 3000 rpm assuming all else is the same as noted above.

Awesome. will do. I appreciate the help a lot.I read a good way to tell if its a 460 or 429 is if it has an external ballencing weight on the balancer. im going to check and time according to what you said. Thanks again

I don't know if that's always the case?? I've had two 460 blocks (well, actually 3 cause I'm dumb :banghead:, long story :) ) , my original was externally balanced (had a hatchet like weight next to the balancer), the rebuilt 460 that I replaced it with was internally balanced..

That be true the 460 can be internally or externally balanced

So the only way really to find out is by checking the crank then i take it. The motor is going to eventually get yanked this winter and then i'll know. Just hoping for the 8.5 to 1 compression not 7 to 1. 7 to 1 just seemes like its going to be a pig to me! Im a car guy and know boats are different but thats just way low of compression for any kind of power to be made it seems. Thanks for the info, i appreciate it.

I don't know fords but on a chev. if it's externally balanced, you can tell by looking for a balance weight on the flexplate(on the engine side). My junk is set at 42* locked but thats another story. :o
