Title: who want to help me out
Post by: Curt95 on May 30, 2008, 07:33:14 PM
Who is willing to help me out getting my boat going that lives in the El Cajon area?  I will pay 50-100 bucks.  I just put a rebuilt engine in my boat and I am having trouble geting her to run.  I believe its just the timing but I cant get it right.  maybe the valves might be a little out of adjustment but thats it to get her going I think but not sure.  I just need some help Please

If you can give us some information on what is happing we can give you some suggestions on where to start.

So even if nobody can get to your place, we still can help.

Its a 454 I Think the timing is out of wack I cant even get it started I tried to get the first cylinder a 10 degrees before top dead center then line up the distributor on number on but I dont really get any fire out of it every once in a while it will but not enough.  I just think I'm not doing it right I trying to teach myself out of a book but dont really understand everything. :banghead: I think im not really doing it right.

The first place to start is to make sure you had the engine at TDC when you stabbed the distributor.  Remove the #1 spark plug, crank the engine over and watch for the timing mark to come up, with your finger on the spark plug hole you'll feel compression push it off.  Try to get the balancer mark at the 10 degree mark and remove the distributor cap, does the rotor point to the terminal with the wire going to the #1 cylinder?   If not you need to restab the distributor.

All right so get cylinder 1 at top dead center 0 degrees then put the distributor in. then crank over to 10 degrees before top dead center and distributor should point at the #1 wire I will try that tomorrow and see what I can do.

You can stab the distributor with the timing marks at 10 BTDC.  But you need to make sure your on the compression stroke first, and that the rotor is pointing to the #1 terminal on the cap when installed.

Couple other questions...

Who assembled the engine assembly?

What was done to the engine during rebuild?

What cam was installed?

I will work for beer and if it takes longer then I'm gonna need more beer.  ::)  I'm in El Cajon, around the 8 and Mollison. I'm not a top fuel mechanic (hardly, LOL) but I can get a Chevy to fire, assuming it isn't blown up to begin with. 619-787-7987 Rod.

If Plesh actually shows up and doesn't "plesh out" the video I am sure will surface at some point.

  If he doesn't supply the beer early on, then what in the hell am I supposed to blame for not getting it running?  :sly:

I dunno, the guy needs to call me so we can set it up. That's if he even wants the help, I don't recall him replying yet. My son has a baseball game this AM at 9 which should last at least until noon. What day are you thinking of going to El Cap, today or tomorrow? Either works for me (I might need a tow  :banghead: ).
