can the timing wear out the starter?

if your timing is to advanced it will make it difficult to turn over. the starter is just an electric motor, over work it and it will wear out.

What were the symptoms that made you replace the starter?

How long have you been using this boat prior to replacing the starter?

Did you check the voltage at the batt posts b4 and during cranking?

Any chance you left the key on or have something that drained the batt between last week and now?

OK, Glenn usually nails these things right away. But I'll play the blind squirrel for a minute.

First, Aux Solenoid? could be that.

Second, Ignition switch (You'd be surprised! My late Bezzer had that happen with MANY non-beleiving witnesses that that could be the problem).

Third, Battery. (Had that be an issue recently with a fairly NEW battery too!).

Just a few ideas, but I'd be looking at #2 seriously. A $12 switch to try and might fix it.

Just had this happen to me...took starter out and took to kragen has starter tested...pretty simple starter failed test new starter...we had same delima it was the solenoid that failed...acted like it was a dead battery type of deal...tested both batteries and had the volts tested kill switch ignition switch everything...came back to starter...If you have aux solenoid or one on starter could possibly be them

I agree with the solenoid being the problem, when I had my boat shop, I would not put a starter on without a new solenoid or slave solenoid.

To eliminate the key switcheroo dealio, try jumping the solenoid at the engine...If it cranks good, it is either the wiring or the switch.....

To do this, use a jumper lead from the "battery" pole to the small pole with the yellow wire, if it has a 12V coil boost wire, be careful, it may start and cause a little pee to come out (don't ask) :sly:

It was 1 AM, we (my dad and I) just put the 454 back in our jet after replacing the starter and fixing an oil leak, the boat was backed into the garage and we jumped the solenoid to see if it would crank because we were headed to the lake that night and wanted to see the starter work...It did and it started up too, 4" collector open headers against a wall at 1 AM will make bodily fluids jump out of you like a firehose  :screwy: :P

Ohhhhhh OK! I get it! Did that nearly to myself when the Moo first fired! lol. (Still get a kick outta doing it to noobs that haven't been exposed to these things!).

That's funny! (10 times louder in the 'rage!)

I pulled the starter and the whole housing where the gear and bearing was cracked and broke off . So safe to say that was my problem .Cheap kragen crap > They replaced it i installed and the boat started fine, hope this doesnt happen again

Ummm Just to restate what you said, the Nose cone (That holds the bendix and attached starter gear in the starter) was cracked/broken?

Dude, you've got a severely worn ring gear or the starter needs to be shimmed properly to work with your setup.

Just my .02

Did you look inside to see how the flywheel was?  Did the starter drag anywhere?  I had to shim mine but you could hear it drag.

Where would you put shims on a Ford starter?

Sorry about that, mine is a masco gear reduction starter.

Where would you put shims on a Ford starter?

Can't shim it, but there are two versions of a Ford starter, one has two mounting holes and one has three, the three I believe was used in the heavy duty, or big block stuff, where I am going with this, sometimes the bolts get left loose and it tears up the nose gear, inspect the step where it goes into the hole and inspect the bolt holes as well, if they look beat up (starter remanufacturers just bead blast them and reuse them) get a different starter.

I have seen some instances where they use too long of bolts in the blind holed bell housings and they don't tighten up right too...

Just things to check...

Yeah, no shimming a Ford starter. But a nose cone breaking or cracking means the bendix gear is riding up on top of the ring gear. The ONLY way that can happen, unless something else got caught up in it. (In which case, you have maybe another issue, loose parts rolling around in the bellhousing, like a bolt that came out of the crank, or something.) Is a worn flexplate gear or bendix.

If you're flexplate has any wear to it to the point where you can feel a 'lip' halfway or even partway back on any teeth, it needs to go away and be replaced. I read broken nose cone, and I would replace it anyway, regardless, as well as (obviously) the starter.

Again, just my input, but I've seen this before on street engines and it's ALWAYS one of these things.

I have a question i just put a new starter in my boat and when i hook up the battery as soon as i touch the ground wire to the terminal the motor starts to crank. What would cause this?

sounds like the solenoid is wired up wrong or is bad . Starter update made 2 trips out to silverwood this week and it starts like a champ.Yay

I had that on my buddys boat and it stumped the hell outta me. It ended up the new starter had a metal plate in between the man power and the exiter wire I pulled it and it worked fine. well that starter went out on friday so I called autozone for a replacement (it was a lifetime warranty deal) and used the part number off the starter, the new starter didn't have a metal strap/plate.. so You might want to check that.
