i was thinking of putting on my boat. they just sound cool!!! a friend of mine said that you lose a couple hp because the drag from the gears. not sure if true or false.

if you're not driving for long periods of time - do it ;), don't throw away the chain set!

BTW do you have OT headers?

good luck. 75fantasy

If you aren't dead nuts full bore balls to the walls race why would you do that?
I think most people put them in their cars to fake a supercharger  ;D

I doubt an engine would run long enough to break either setup with quality
parts in a boat.

That's just my opinion as I have never used one.

Never been a fan of gear drives , not sure why I'd intentionally install a PJ "noisey" unit just for the whine and racket , with a Blower the noise comes with the territory my 02

Way back when I worked in a speed shop (damn that makes me sound old  ), I sold more of the "noisy" gear drives than the standard ones, and always wondered who actually liked them

On a SBC I really dig the Cloyes four gear set up, quite, accurate and when running in a jet at 6K they keep things in check, small blocks seem to tear chains up with big cams and heavy spring pressures at high RPM.

I don't like PJ's four gears due to the noise.   I also don't like em on BBC's because they really aren't necissary unless you run you BBC at high R's for extended periods or racing and need the longevity.

You can buy some pretty nice double and single roller TC's these days...

If you go gear drive and want it quiet, get the "Q" series and drill a 1/64" hole in one of the front galley plugs the point near the gear mesh, keeps em cool and even quieter...

If I remember right...those don't "bolt on" there is some special machine work required. Of course If I'm wrong it won't be the 1st.lol

Growing up in So Cal I remember two cars in particular. Both black, lowered, manual trans and gear driven. One was a '65 mustang fastback w/ 5 spd, the other was a '59 chevy shortbed stepside, 4spd bigblock. I dont think these cars would have been so memorable and gnarly w/o the noise, it was just "part of the package". I have a really nice Milodon gear drive I've had new since the 80's just waiting for the right project. I'm building a '56 chev manual trans car now....hhhmmmm

Heres a clip of what the boat souds like w/ a blower:
