Do you have a Ford alternator or a GM alternator?
-
the one thats on there right now is a gm i believe...it has 2 wires
the one i want to put on and i know for 100% it works is a ford one with 3 wires
-
Maybe this will help?
And thanks to whomever posted these diagrams - I think I scraped them off this site long ago!! Whoever you are - U da man!

On the GM you only have to run the one power wire to it, and bridge the two terminals off the back. Ford alternators need a resistor, stick with the built in one on the GM
