Olds 455 , High oil temps, low press.
« on: August 19, 2007, 10:30:27 AM »
Had the Kona out 2X. I bought it for 1k. :)  Had the above problem.
Pulling motor Mon. Nite. Hopefully just replace Bottom end bearings and
oil pump. I'll probly put oil return lines in the valve covers down to the oil pan.
10Qt Pan.
Is this common with the 455?
I've only been into boats for 3 weeks. I now own a Glastron Carlson 23' SV23
w/ 460 and a Berkeley also. :) Plus the 18' Kona .
LOVE this site!!!!!!!!
I'll try to post up some pics.

From what I've read, you're on the right track; those mods should help.

The 455 oil return is poor, which causes these issues; I've read threads on return lines to pan but it seems to me that a mod to increase return to valley would be better; but I don't know.

See Hotboat magazine: "The practical Olds Motor", from about a year or so ago. Everything you need to know. Read it, memorize it,believe it. No, really, it explains a LOT. The main problem is finding a shop that will do things someone elses way.  Its a pride thing.   TIMINATOR

I talked to "Da Man" last week in length. He is preparing to write up another one that will include info on how things work with newly available aftermarket intake and heads. HotBoat mag is often hard to find but they have recently been bought out so maybe alot of things will improve. If you PM me your adress I can send you copies of copies of the article, but honestly I probably won't get to a copy machine till I go back to work next Wed. You can try to order a back copy from HB you will need the June 06 issue. Or you can see if the guy that scanned and emailed me mine will do it for you. I got his info from www.realoldspower.com.  You can read the whole 5 page thread about the article and others over there
If anyone would like a copy, email me at kevinvidrine@msn.com and i'll send you a pdf copy of it.

Whatever you do be sure and tell em SoCalJetBoats sent ya, right Brad   ;D

Damn I know I shouldn't..... BUT I will ! >:D  Start to assemble the short block,This is a quickie bearing patch cause there is only 2 weeks of boating left in Colorado.
I look at the piston before I send it home and the  &^$$@# ring is broke!!!!
I hate doing things this way!! BUT 2 weeks left!!!   I make a few phone calls to find 1 top ring.
I'll keep everyone up to date on this adventure.

p s  After a few more times in the water the motor is coming back out a done properly.
It's gettin a 6-71 mainly for bling and to get the perf up to sea level type power.
Anyone have an Olds blower intake? I really don't have time to make one.
