Post by: daniel.sykes on September 25, 2013, 12:12:32 PM
hey guys i have an issue with a chevy 454 cranking hard cold or hot. Ive put a new starter in it along with shims and a new battery and its still not fixed.Yesterday i finally got it started and it timed at 14 degrees BTDC but when i went to retime it to about 4-6 degrees the motor wouldnt hardly run at all. Any suggestions??? Thanks

P.S. I live in Willow Valley so if anyone lives close and want to help me in person I always have beer in the fridge.

Question one.....

How does it run? Have you had it on the water?

I would first disconnect the drive line to isolate a pump problem.

It is sounding to me like an early camshaft going south, but without more info, it's just a WAG.

Once I could get it to start it would run great and when the pump was disconnected about a month ago it would still crank hard

Some simple suggestions:
- Check battery cables and connections - do you still have a good ground?  Are the cables/terminals/connections corroded?
- Check battery charge/voltage, even if it's new....
- Have battery load-tested

Good luck!

Large or small flywheel?

Does the starter sound good when it cranks?

Do any of the cables get hot?

Have you tried cranking the motor over with a ratchet and socket or a breaker bar?

While cranking it over, put a volt meter across the battery terminals to see what the voltage drops to. Above 10v?

Have you tried cranking the engine with the ignition off? Does it crank faster?

Any chance of water in the engine as far a cylinders?

What starter motor?

Flex plate our flywheel?

Ring gear on correctly if flywheel?

Is the block painted on the starter mount pad?

What size cables? And what terminals?

What does the ground attach to?

How long are the cables?

Tried using jumper cables? Does it improve?

What compression ratio are you thinking? The ignition off test will eliminate this one.

ever heard it crank better than it does now?

I can do this all day...

Try a true 12v to the starter. I had to put a relay to get a good 12 to the starter. Worked like no other after that
