Title: Chevy Cavalier A/C inop.
Post by: Horizonjet on July 08, 2014, 08:11:57 PM
My sons a/c quit working on his car. Turn it on and compressor clutch engages, coming fan comes on then after a min. Comp. Shuts off, then comes back on for a min. them shuts off again. I thought it might be low on freon but the gauge on the can says its really high pressure in the red so it ain't low on freon. I'm stumped now? Any ideas? Compressor turns freely by hand. Compressor ain't noisy when running.

Maybe a clogged orifice tube. I have also seen those refill cans overcharge the system and take out the high pressure switch. Just a guess. I worked as a mechanic 18 years ago. It's not my profession. Hopefully Phil will chime in. He knows everything.

Oh. Its a 2002. I didn't put any freon in it. Pressure was high and probably would not take Amy.

Check the plug on the pressure switch for a bad connection. it is a known problem.

The only other thing it could be is a restricted drier (unlikely) or a failed expansion valve.

Ok. Tried a new high pressure switch and it did not work. Compressor comes on and cooling fan comes on hooked up a gauge and high pressure is really high so there must be a blockage somewhere so I am going to check orfice tube

LOL! The high gauge comes with the can you buy at the store..LOL. I was a mechanic a while back and the only manifold guages I have are for R-12 :D

Well shit! Do I feel stupid....getting old sucks!
Then the guage for the low side reads high then and I don't know what the high side reading is.

Little far or I'd say come use my gauges!  Go to harbor freight and grab a set. It won't be the last time you will use them.

Hell buy em. Use em. Then return em. Harbor freight takes everything back.

Just be sure you pick up a Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion chart...

I bought the Harbor Freight manifold and the first thing I did was change the gauges.. Celsius isn't used for anything in this industry.....  :screwy:

Update if anyone else runs into this problem. High pressure switch connector has a/c hose pushing on it at all times. They were designed that way. After 12 years it ends up pulling the wires apart inside wore installation so nothing comes on. You can buy s replacement for 15 bucks or stuff one in your pocket from salvage yard (after ohm testing to make sure those wires and connector are good and problem is fixed. Yea!!! :)
