I have found that over the last few years, there are more and more parts coming from China. Appearance wise, they look as good as anything domestic in many cases. (There is some crap out there that looks it too). However, with Chinese parts the quality of the metal is unknown, and this is where the problem lies. I am referring to crankshafts and connecting rods particularly. While the final product may be comparable to something made in U.S.A., it can just as well not. They do make batches of parts of course, and sometimes the metal is spec, but other times it is not. (They will use whatever is available. on a given day). Unless one has access to proper testing equipment, one cannot be sure what it is. I do my best to buy only parts made and machined in the U.S.A., even though they are more expensive. Not only am I sure of the quality, but it also helps to keep tradesmen employed.

Found this out the hard way. Not by any fault of my own except I trusted the POS I bought the boat from. But now I got some good ol' made in the USA parts going in her. Just the piece of mind I'll have when I stab the go pedal makes it money and time well spent!!

This has been a problem for years. Nothing new. However with the Internet these days, the parts are way more common now than ever. Add to that, many companies that used to make quality US made parts have outsourced their manufacturing to "other countries" to save on taxes and be "more competitive" in the world market. Then the US takes it in the shorts a total of three times. Once, by the loss of skilled labor jobs, once by the loss of American tax dollars and a third by having Johnny P. Taxpayer gets screwed by the substandard products.
All I have to say is, write you're congressman, senator and POTUS and get the laws changed so it is no longer profitable to move your manufacturing overseas. This isn't rocket science people.
We see it all the time. Two products side by side with the same claims in quality and workmanship, one is 7% cheaper than the US made one and it is a Chinese or Mexican pile of crap that lasts an hour past the warranty. Awesome.
Places like Wal Mart are keeping these predatory companies thriving.
It is time to wake up and be the squeaky wheel.
