This year's dates are Friday 10/7/11 to Monday 10/10/11. In years past we've been at the Avi, and it's always worked out for us. Unfortunately they've got new management that's a pain in the ass. That being said, this year our host hotel is going to be the River Palms in Laughlin http://www.river-palms.com/ (http://www.river-palms.com/). They were super accomodating to our needs, they've got great room rates and secure boat parking.
We can launch from a number of places but Big Bend State Park is the closest, and it's reasonably priced and we can go anywhere from there that we'd normally go http://parks.nv.gov/bb.htm (http://parks.nv.gov/bb.htm)
Room rates are as follows;
Friday 10/7/11-$42.99
Saturday 10/8/11-$42.99
Sunday 10/9/11-$17.99
There is the usual $50 charge to cover any damages, you don't get charged this unless you damage shit, so be good and save your $$$. They have rooms that take pets, they've waived the pet fee but not the deposit that you'll get back provided Fido doesn't eat the TV.
As soon as I have confirmation I will post up the group code. Reservations are on you, you have until 14 days before the event to make the reservation & get the rates.
See you in October

Hey Skip, I'm gonna have to pay you to tow some gas cans on a tube or something. :P
Is there fuel available anywhere near Lazy Harrys ? I guess there is gas at the Avi, does anyone know
how late their pumps are open ? I've never been to Laughlin, so this sounds good, I hope the parking lot is as good
as the Avi's, that was awesome last October.

Yeah, but this event is about kickin' back, floating, having some beers & being with friends, same thing as the one you're talking about, minus the HP & egos.

Sounds like fun. And its Oktoberfest in Laughlin that weekend. Might have to show up and put a dent in the liver.

I cannot believe the number of things that have kept me from getting to the river this summer. Just getting tires on my trailer has taken more than 3 weeks! :banghead: My Spectra looks like shit, but I am gonna make it to one SCJB outing in 2011 if it kills me!
I was just looking up where the hotel was located and the reviews on Yahoo Travel definately show more than a few unhappy customers. I noticed a few peeps complained of being overcharge or charged twice. That is happening more and more these days. Be sure and check you statements afterwards. LOTS of people I know got screwed at Stateline when the D37 motorcycle races were there in May.

Thanks captain party pooper. I have stayed there many times with no problems. they are being super accommodating to our group unlike big river inn and the avi. I never buy the BS reviews online..or at least take them with a HUGE grain of salt as everyone likes to bitch, no one likes to praise.
If ya dont feel comfortable staying there, theres a ton of other places to stay. Its just easier for us all to stay at one place so we can all meet up for drinks once we're all off the water.

Well it looks like I will be able to make this trip. Excited never boated on the river yet so looking forward to going and meeting some cool peep. Should be a couple of other boats going with me. See you guys there.

Where do you anticipate doing the actual boating, going up to the lake or boating on the river? I'm thinking the water will be a bit nippy. I don't mind nippy on the girls but not too keen on it myself. 8)

We'll be on the river, water will be fine...

Well thanks for clearing that up, you have been most helpful. ::)

For the record, this is annual trip. originally was started by Slowride and 78southwind back in October of 2008. That year it was ass cold and windy and the water level was super low.....and FREEZING. Those who sacked up and still went had a blast. The annual trips after were much warmer. That fall was a freak year. It snowed 8-10 inches in vegas that december :screwy:
Heres some pics from that 2008 trip. Notice everyone in sweatshirts haha.

It does look like people had a good time despite the weather. I'll start thinking sunny thoughts for y'all. 8)

Gc quit trying to be a Debbie downer this trip and March are the best actual boating trips we have. Oct. Is gorgeous on the river ya the sweatshirts may come out as were pulling the boats out of the water but its always been bitchin for us.

A) All I did is ask about conditions. I have only boated in Laughlin once and things went badly right at the ramp. Don't remember much else about it.
B) For a place that has a reputation for cold water already, I was just wonderin'. I like to be IN the water, like on a ski, A LOT. I tend not to just sit in my boat keeping my black socks high and dry all weekend.
C) NO ONE has tried harder, spent more money, and had more set backs in getting on the water than me this year.
Geezus, tough crowd. ;D

Everyone finds a cove or sandbar to hang out and BS. Many will stay parked all day but several will go and run 'em. Usually later in the day we'll a run up river and float down together.
You're not required to do anything listed, but if you're seen on the river and don't stop and check in it could get ugly :sly:

Hello everyone
I just joined this site and can't wait to meet some of you in Laughlin in a few weeks. I finally got the motor and jet done in my Hondo about a month ago and can't wait to take it up and down the Colorado river.
Hope to meet those of you that are going.
See ya

Looks like thw weather is gonna stay in th 90,s rest of the week. Lets hope it stays there for the following week.

Is there a winter get together? I DGAF if it snows, my shit will run year round. Daddys gotta be workin weekends so he gets his rebuilt pump back.

This will be the last unofficial SCJB event for the year but the Tom Papp memorial at Lake Elsinore will have a huge turn out in January.

Danny & Sheree'
thier parking lot is awsome! rooms are ok. they dont have much inside to eat at, ok buffet sucky dennys, the casino next door has a joes crab shack and 24hr caffee accesable by the river walk.
when you get to river palms, go past the main entrance(stay on main street) you will pass a parking structure on the left you will start to go up a grade there will be a left turn that is a road to the top of that structure.

I know there was some concern over driving back to the hotel at the end of the day. I made arrangements with a local to drive your truck & trailer from the ramp to the hotel for $20. We'll call her when we're heading to the ramp, she'll meet us there and start shuffling vehicles. I don't know about you but I'm thinking $20 is a lot cheaper than a DUI.
What do you guys think?
-
Awesome idea Skip    That was a big concern to me
-
heres the basic rule here....if youre too drunk to drive your car on the road, you shouldnt be driving your boat in the first place.
i find it funny theres more concern about driving 5 miles on a road to the hotel then driving amongst your friends in your boat all day.
not trying to be a debby downer here, but its something that shouldnt be taken lightly. lets be a little bit more responsible here guys.

I completely agree with you Brad, but the ugly reality is that road cops are LOOKING for DUI a lot harder than boat cops, there's a big difference between too drunk to drive your boat and too drunk to drive your truck. What I mean by that is this, if I'm in my boat, been knocking back coldies all day I'm usually ok to drive, my boat. I'm a lot more aware of my environment and surroundings when I'm on the water. Now put me in my truck & all bets are off, especially if they bust out the breathalyzer.
I'm not advocating drunken boating, just trying to save someone a DUI.
-
Needles Hwy and Casino drive are prime spots for L.V. metro pd. I seriously advise a designated driver for the trip to the hotel, Ill have my D.D.(son-in-law) driving the boat and the truck. Also Coincides with "Das Beer Fest" at the 'Belle. Boat smart.

I saw a reply about "Lazy Harry's" and gas....There is NO GAS at Lazy's, AND the weeds have gotten out of control, so jet boaters beware of sucking up weeds.... There is plenty of gas within a few minutes drive on the Az side of the river. (Even race 110 oct.).. Just about anywhere from the bridge to Rotary Park, you could have gas delivered via vehicle.... A few 5 gallon cans, and a short drive.... Although, the average fuel tank size should last pretty much all day, unless you're headed south to Havasu/Pirates cove... I'm here in Bullhead, and will likely be in town that weekend, so if someone needs a fuel pit stop, I'd probably be able to accommodate them.. Stay AWAY from fuel on the river this time of the year. They're allowing their tanks to get quite low, which also means the crap on the bottom will wind up in your tank and foul your filters quickly.... Again Boys and Girls, I'm here in Bullhead and have a fairly well equipped shop if anyone needs to do repairs to save their weekend...This IS NOT a business shop, just my "hobby" shop, so there is NO MONEY involved with my offer.....Everyone, feel free to write down my cell number and call if you need help, and/or parts to keep your boat going. (there may be money involved if we're talking parts I might have)....
I could also be "coaxed" into bringing fuel downriver for a few boats that wanted to venture further than their fuel supplies would allow..... (I would need your cans and cash in advance, as well as where and when to meet up downriver in my truck)....(A few cans would fit in my boat, but then I'd be on the edge of my "range" as well...) Anything I can do for this group/ Please don't hesitate to call me......
BE SAFE, HAVE FUN, and I might just show up on the water during the weekend....

Been to laughlin several times since I bought the boat in May, if you go to pirate's you will suck grass. I have been there every time I have gone to laughlin and I've fished grass out the pump every time. It's standard procedure after we hang out there. Get near the exit of the no wake, back it up on the beach and start plucking.
I do love Pirate's cove. The Barnacle burger hits the spot, waitresses are easy on the eyes and two weeks ago filled up on fuel two days in a row and had no troubles... Just $130 cheeseburgers.
I do my competitive drinking while staggering around the riverwalk with my towable ice chest. I saw far too many boats being towed by patrols with driver and crew members zip tied. There is still a zero tollerance policy on the water and binoculars have been around forever.
Maybe patrol boats thin out after labor day. This was the following weekend at big bend

not sure if you have ever boated near the casinos....but its 100 times worse than a holiday weekend in front of the Avi. I'd rather go down to big bend. its closer to the spots we boat.

I was just thinking of location for the end of the day drive, I don't care where we launch

Just checked expedia, $28 fri/sat 13.99sun
Thanks for the heads up. I just got off the phone with the River Palms group sales. I told them about this and they beat Expedia. 26.99 for Fri/Sat 12.99 for Sun. I have to say that they've gone above and beyond in my dealings with them for this little gathering. Tip heavy & tip often!
WOOT!

i get ya....my thoughts are this....its a long haul via boat down to that section of the river....id rather tow down there than drive the boat down there in the event something happens (especially with my luck and this boat lately)....i'd hate to be broken on the wrong end of the river.

Cool, that will leave a couple extra bucks for the casino.

from the way i understand it....it will be the price they will give you when you check in (if you reserved under the group rate)....regardless of what they quoted you at the time of reservation.

Alright Skip, we'll have to pitch in for somethin' cold and wet at the bar for all your hard work. >:D
It's getting close, is there gonna be a new roll call to see who's actually showing up to this shindig ?
We're in, I think the regulars minus one are showing up. Too bad Gordy and Marylou are too far away for this one
but I think they're in next March.
Anyhows thanks for setting it up. We are looking forward to the weekend. :P

Come on everyone, let's make this an awesome finish to the 2011 boating season.
-
I have free drinks, either on the water or back at the Palms, for somebody with some engine knowledge to help me time my motor and give me some pointers on what I can do with this Ford to get a little more out of what I have now.
The timing is close but I think it needs some fine tuning. Ill bring the extra springs and weights for the dizzy and a light and anything else that may be useful.
-
X2 ^^^ What he said. I got a new dizzy that's been curved on a machine, new plugs, newly rebuilt Ebrock carb on a 460. It runs great in the driveway ( a little rough down low) but on the water and hammer down it surges and pops mildly. Any of you experts wanna work for alcohol? I can't seem to find anybody who knows what they are doing.
And how come people keep telling me there are no timing marks? How the hell do you time it w/o a mark?
It looks to be an epic weekend, hope I can make it.
-
Is everybody going to be hanging at the Avi beach? Seems like a good spot for all the hot rod boats at this time of year... since I live here, I'm in fo sho  Also got a shop Next to Moneypit's full of tools, air tools, welders if anyone needs help...
-
Is everybody going to be hanging at the Avi beach?
most likely not all day, but maybe for a bit.
-
Hey buddy...get our name on the going list!! Will be launching from beach by our pad, so we will meet up with you guys at big bend. Is there a time frame determined yet?
Also, we reside here in Fort Mohave, so if anyone needs anything while here on our turf,
will be more than happy to try to accomodate!

It may be that you have marks for initial timing, but your MAX timing is off the scale. All you need is a "dial back" timing light, problem solved.... Most people set their timing at "all in" at a given RPM, and let the initial fall where it will.... If you don't get a "dial back" and/or need help after you get here, give me a call...

PS...Seriously guys/girls, I'm here in Bullhead most of the year, so when you guys choose to come here to the river, it means a lot to me to make sure you don't have any bullfeathers problems that spoil your weekend. Tony and I are "shop" neighbors, these are NOT businesses, just hobby shops for engines, boats, quads, customs, etc etc.... We'll be more than happy to help anyone that needs it, be it a trailer issue, a vehicle failure, or an actual boating problem.... "Mi casa, su casa" so to speak, (and I apologize to the Spanish speaking for my BS attempt at My house, your house....).... I'm at the shop 24/7 unless I'm out boating or drinking, running errands etc etc.......AND, my help COULD extend to being a Designated Driver if any of you want to "bar hop" in beautiful downtown Bullhead City...... Just call my friends, just call......
PSS When is the planned " launch"? is it Friday, Thursday, Saturday??? OH, to anyone that hasn't been here, DO NOT exit the launch area on the downriver end, VERY shallow, ASK someone that knows the river before trying to cut thru there, AND when you see a bush sticking out, bare to the east shore, 50-75' away from the bush.....
-
Hopefully, we will be rollin' in around 1:00 - 2:00 Friday afternoon.
I suspect the guys that are there will be at the cove or maybe Lazy Harrys.
Do you really have to walk the boats in to Harrys ?
Are there any park rangers or anything at Big Bend ?
See ya here or there or something. Yay it's river time !!!

Well, no, you don't have to walk them in, but if you drive in you WILL suck some weeds if you're driving a jetboat...Sure, you can always clean them out, but it's just a hassle most don't need. The water flow has been DOWN lately, so please be very careful in unfamiliar areas... As far as Rangers at Big Bend, I've never launched there. I'm pretty sure the LE here in BHC has backed off on patrols after Labor Day, and Nevada only uses "Game and Fish" officers, and I've only seen them once or twice out in the river. Nev G&F will stand on the Casino docks and motion you in for mufflers, but we just ignore them since they don't have a boat!!!! Our noise laws are like everywhere else. It depends on who sees you, your actions at the time, and of course your SOBRIETY.... For the most part, those of us locals without mufflers, (I have some in, that may come out for this weekend), just back off and make sure we have water flowing out the headers when we see a LE boat coming.... I would advise AGAINST any early morning open header blasts near the houses as BHC PD will come if they get any phone calls. Most shoreline residents are cool, but it only takes one to drop the dime...... I assume the "cove" is at the ramp you're using. There are nice beaches there, and it's kinda in the middle between Davis Camp and the Avi for short day trips.... I'll get with Tony and see when he's headed out to see you guys, and most likely join him, and maybe a few other locals......
Ray
PS Mike, "Sold Honda Bought Hondo", may drive his Hydro up from Havasu on Saturday...... Long trip, but it's a v drive so he gets much better mileage than us jets....
PSS The Avi area has been VERY low in the mornings, very low....

Anyone bringing kids?
My daughter would prefer an actual teenager to hangout with more than the regulars that just think they're teenagers. ;)

Danny we drove ours in and out twice with no issues just shut it off a couple times in the thick stuff wish we were going to be there . look for the 5 dollar bill at Harrys
-
Last 4 times I launched at Lazy Harry's I had to pull weeds from my loader, and pull the handhole cover to get all the weeds wrapped around the pump shaft... love that place, but go at your own risk.

Time to bust out some serious mspaint skillz....mad-MSpaint-skillz
This is a picture of the big bend area...
[attachimg=1]
RED - Back Bay Entrance
ORANGE - Back Bay Beaches
YELLOW - Big Bend Park (Launch Ramp)
GREEN - Lazy Harrys (entrance is just north of the POW Memorial and south of the Gas Line)
The "cove" previously referred to is vague to me....I assume the cove at the Avi?
I dont know where the majority of people are hanging out. I know some like to hang out in the Back Bay, but I would prefer if we didnt hide back there due to so many new people coming out on this trip. Theres plenty of nice beaches along the river and the traffic should be minimal so the water shouldnt be too rough. I'll bring the SCJB flag so people can spot us...

I agree on the not spending to much time at back bay we fill up those little beaches to fast. Glass beach isn't to bad of a run Dr and plenty of room for all. And ill have my phone on me so send a text or call and ill direct the newbies to where were all at. Daniel 951-809-5272

Brad, I think the "cove" is the one right there by the ramp. There are several nice beaches right in that area...Maybe 1/4 mile down river to the best beaches with installed canopies... I'm bringing one EZ up that I'll leave up all day.... The Avi cove "no wake" markers have been laying down on their sides in the mornings here lately, maybe late afternoon would be "up", but the water flow has been low these last few weeks after labor day... I would strongly suggest going UP river cruising until after 2-3 PM, depending on the water flow...Lucky did pretty well with your room rates, maybe if he called BLM and asked for mass flows out of the dam???? ;) ;)
Ray 805 300 0012------write it (#) down kids, it might come in handy.....
-
I'm pretty sure the Cove is if you launch at Lazy Harry's, at the first right hand turn there's a no wake Cove on the left if you look at Brad's picture. Very nice beach about 100' long, but also hidden from view due to toolies.
I think Rio Lomas beach is the biggest/most visible beach for everyone. It's half way between Rotary Park and the Avi on Arizona side. People familiar with the area know it's near Target in BHC. That's where most likely we'll be so I can attempt to see everyone cruising around. Be there at 10am if anyone wants to join. It's a great mid way spot from the Avi to the Casinos.
-
looking forward to it. Keep us updated on times and place to meet up on Saturday. our #'s are 928)201-6502 and 928)219-9058

Rio Lomas is alcohol FREE....... No beer/booze on the beach, or on a boat the is touching land.... Tony, there is some dangerous rock/sand bars down there, and the water has been pretty low lately. It may get lower since we've had rain..... BHPD WILL sneak up on that beach and write tickets for beer..........

-
gotta be able to dring beer and your telling me that the water is too low for the jets even? is it like scary low?
No, not scary low, but early mornings require some caution, as well as knowledge about where to be careful. Like I said, I've seen the Avi No Wake markers laying on their sides before 10AM, and the beach Tony was talking about has some very shallow spots between there and Lazy Harry's if you don't know the main channel... Nothing to get worried about, just beware of where you're going..... The Rio Lobo beach is set aside for families since a few bad seeds ruined it for everyone by getting all drunk and causing problems... There are plenty of other beaches/spots up near "Big Bend" ramp, and there is really no need to stop at an alcohol free beach with so many other choices... I'll be out on the river Friday afternoon, and look for the So Cal flag up around Big Bend....
Ray

Good Morning boys and girls, we have lift off of that big ball of fire in the sky..... A great start, as a cloudless sky brightens to the rising sun..... Suppose to be SUNNY and 75 today, kinda chilly tonight, down into the 50s, BUT, SUNNY and 80 for Saturday, and SUNNY and 81 for Sunday... We here in town are enjoying this mild weather after a couple of months of constant triple digit heat, only cooling into the low 90s at night.... You guys couldn't have planned this any better weatherwise, and it should be a wonderful weekend on the river....
Ray
PS If you go out at night, take a sweatshirt!!!
PSS I'll see some of you on the water this afternoon

Well, how cool is this. We'll make the track all the way across the river. ;D
Oh, and with the low flows, it's an excellent excuse to bring the Circus Boat out of hibernation.

Well I guess I spoke too soon. My 8 yr old (who had been getting better) is now feverish again and sleeping for several hours now instead of eating. We were up well into the night Tues. and Wed. nights keeping him iced down, and it looks like it is gonna be another long night. You guys have fun and I'll catch up with you at Elsie I'm sure. Play safe and somewhat sane so the casino will continue to be good to us. I know how you Vegas boyz are. >:D

After seeing Brad and friends last night, I headed out this morning @ 10:30 to throw the old Tahiti in the water and hook up with the SCJB crowd up river...... The water at Rotary Park ramp is about 18" deep   I'll have to wait at least 2-3 hours and see if the water comes up, or find somewhere else to launch....Real LOW... I don't ever recall seeing it this low....

Ill post some vid of Brad shufflin on the dance floor later.

Thanks for that Dan. It looks warm and breezy, just like here. Hope you all have awesome hangovers.
now I'm gonna go slit my wrists :banghead:

This was the first river trip for me and all I can say is what a experience! Left the ramp at big bend swung around to the beach everyone was at and next thing I found my self in shallow rocky water. Found a small rock in the diverter then was going to follow everyone on a run then notice a vibration. Pit it back on the trailer and seen a rock wedged in the impellar. I tried to get it out but no luck so that put a end to the day for me. It was nice meeting and chatting with you guys maybe next time when the water isn't as shallow lol.

Here are some pics I took with my little cheapie camera, and the shots on the water required some multi-tasking because I was also driving.... If I missed your boat, and/or your floating group, I'm sorry, the batteries died during the floating shots.... Great weather, as can be seen. A little windy at times, but all and all a great day on the water, and a great group of people to represent SCJB.....
SCJB has struck gold in the desert :sly: (but, we weren't looking for it).... >:(

Another awesome weekend guys I had a blast and am already looking forward to march. Roy wanted me to thank everyone that helped in getting him, his sis and Tyler out of the water safe and getting the boat up. He was still pretty shaken up by the whole ordeal when I talked to him yesterday.

In this case it was caused by a larger boat swamping it

In most cases air will get trapped in the bow letting it bob in the water like a fishing lure. Hook a tow rope to the bow eye and start dragging it until you can get it float a bit and start bailing water.

which is basically what happened but also pulled the bilge plug. And the boat was completely submerged standing on its whacker. Rope broke first time.

So being that mine is an open bow im pretty screwed if that ever happens to me. :banghead:

Did you get the numbers or a description of the boat that swamped it?
All boat operators are responsible for all damages caused by their wakes!

The outboard "jumped a wake" landed hard, threw a girl out, stalled and then swamped...in 3 seconds. the wake he crossed was a flat bottom, the flatty owner also owns the lil red o/b too. thats the way it was explained to me on sunday by the flatty owner. Nobody hurt, 3 people recovered fron the river, most of all the floating interior stuff as recovered. The outboard sputtered and fired sun a.m., it will run again.

Had a blast. Beautiful weather and boats. Glad to see everyone out there, and meeting a bunch of new people. Just got settled in here at Lakeside, it's warmer than Laughlin! Maybe hit up El Cap a couple times before it's freezing

no one got 'thrown' out of the boat....the boat went down gracefully and the occupants just swam out of it. it just took a wave over the rear corner as it was trying to get on plane. its a 14' outboard thats pretty low profile. I dont know who is at fault for the wake nor do i care. Everyone walked away unharmed - thats all that matters. it could have been much worse.

Hey Brad, how did the Southwind run ???

Hey Brad, how did the Southwind run ???
ran good, but sounded like i had a 1/4" lash on all 16 valves.....i even went down to a .016 (hot) lash and still rattled like a tin can full of beans. im gunna pull it apart this weekend.

Good to hear it ran good
