Title: TEMPLE BAR 2011. RELOCATED TO WHERE AND WHEN?
Post by: NORDIC454 on January 13, 2011, 05:02:51 PM
:beer:Its getting close to that time, now that Tom Papp has passed. So i think that most of us have talked about it at one time or another the past few months, but has anything been decided for this years opening trip? Which weedend? Rumor has it a few weeks later. I agree. But where oh where..........

Why the change?  I always though Lake Mead or Mojave would make a real nice change of pace.
The date is kinda a problem for me too.  March 20 is my 50th birthday and we are planning some things at mi casa.

Either way is gonna be bone-ass cold unless you head to the Lower River.    Just my .02

All fair questions

My reasoning
some of us have done some chatting shortly after last years gathering...tb marina didnt treat us like they did the previous year due to a change in management...we got blown out..."white capping in the marina"...parker is a mid-point for so-cal, vegas, phoenix...u might not be from that exact region, but tb was sort of a one sided deal...parker will not be overly crowded in march...yes it might be chili but not horrible...the previous trip to tb it was low 80's...last trip a little cooler...if the wind does blow its not gonna absolutely destroy the parker strip...i think it will be more likely to have more board members to attend due to the fact its a closer drive and not so desolate...if all hell breaks loose we'll look at somewhere else for 2012!

Gc sorry about ur bday deal, but my reasoning for the date is i didnt want to interupt the race schedule...

Any other questions?

Good points, especially about the bar.  Weather can ruin a weekend on a big lake, that's for sure.    I just have never been that enchanted with Parker.   I know it will be a good time wherever the SCJB gang lands.   Party on lads   ;D

Me for the most part am done with Parker.I dont care to go back there this summer. It is just to ruff and to many people for me.Its like sticking 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag.But on the other hand.It should be nice there that weekend.Probably not to many people. It sucks because Parker used to be a good place to go before the ocean boats started going.

First off, and foremost, I want to point out that Nordie is my "brother from another mother"  and my kids call him "Uncle Nordie". He IS my little brother, and we are very close friends.

That being said, he and I had a rather heated text exchange and conversation about the change of venue a couple months ago. Nordie will confirm this. I thought it would drop then. BUT, Nordie does have a good idea and intentions, don't get me wrong!

The Temple Bar trip is significant, though only 2 years old, for a couple reasons. 1, the one that started the whole crazy idea, has NEVER attended.......I will not name names, but do the initials LuckyStiff ring a bell to anyone?  >:D  It was the innaugural voyage of Moo, important to me only I know, but I busted my ASS for 45 days or so to get it ready to make this trip, and am doing the same thing with the same boat for the same reason this year.

The first year for it, was obviously my, and my kids, first experience jet boating. AND meeting Nordie and many close friends from this site (Remember HDRider's comment "who the phuck would paint a boat like that?" LMAO ). Back then Nordie was one scarey lookin dude! But my kids instantly loved him, as did I, and rightfully so. 2, Last year, I think we had as many boats, not the same crew, but some drove like 10 hours to do this! (Aquaholic and AlamoJimmy).  Christ, B-rad even made this one!

Weather wasn't kind to us last year. And the bar thing was fixed rather quickly and easily, and handily as I recall, sooooooo. All we need to do is make SURE Bob has it all set up. The weather's gonna be what it's gonna be, whether Parker or Temple Bar.............

Just my .02

My input....

#1....the majority of people who are bitching (Skip, GC, 76Nordic) Have not been to a single SCJB event at Temple Bar. They have no idea how lame that place is in the dead of winter....and how bad they treated us last year.

#2....The parker strip is jet boat friendly in march. Its not the massive shit storm this time of year that terry likes to portray it it to be all the time. Tell me any other part of the river that we can all meet up on at this time of year and not worry about water levels. Parker is always the same level.

#3....Bluewater resort has MUCH more to offer in the way of things to do. There is NOTHING in temple bar. Its a ghost town this time of year. It was like pulling teeth for them just to open the bar for us. Once they did, all we got was attitude until they saw us throw money down their throats. Bluewater has bars, bands and a DJ saturday nights now. It has the casino as well. We also have Foxes, Roadrunner, etc. to hang out during the day (and night as well) to have beverages.

#4....Temple Bar is a LONG ass drive for everyone for what it is. Its like 2.5 hours from vegas, 5 hours from phoenix, 7 hours from san diego. Where parker is 5 hours from san diego, 3 hours from vegas, and 2.5 from phoenix. I would rather drive 30 minutes more to go to parker. It is a very isolated place. Theres no resteraunts, bars, markets, gas.....other then whats offered by the marina and those said places are only available during certain hours of the day. Not to mention the bar is closed during the winter months. We had to beg them to call in the local bar tender to open it up. And when she showed up, she was anything but pleasant.

I know for myself I will never go back to TB for this event again. I have been told by others were there last year as well they do not want to go back there. I suggested parker and it was applauded by all who apposed TB so thats why Josh and I decided to move it. It just wasnt a SCJB Friendly Venue regardless of what sentimental value it holds.

So that being said.....I will continue to move forward with the BWRC as the host of the next SCJB Season Kickoff venue for 2011.

I for one am a fan of that section of river. I grew up there, My family had a houe in Blue Water on the water with dock and beach. Had breakfast @ Badnochs every morning that we were there. I understand the debate, but I agree with Brad and Josh seeing as I was also part of the deciding conversations. TB was fun because of the people who were there made the best of the situation. With that being said, let's kick off 2011 in a good way. TB was kind of a look into the future of a shitty boating year for most of us who intended( except for Tony who got to get a new boat!) With a lot of blowed up motors.

Right on im all for parker. One i've never done parker 2 my birthday is the 20th of march. And 3 it should be a damn good time. I passed on tb last year due to the drive i would rather spend my days off on the water rather than the highway. That and i could do 2 river trips for what it would cost to do tb.

Last years Temple Bar sounded like a day cruiser event cause of the weather, Wondering if Parker is gonna be the same way? Is it low freeboard friendly? Hows the boat parking at the Blue Water? Only been there once, July '03,('04?) test/tune a new motor. Looking forward to a new event here.

they have a huge parking lot....and yes, its low freeboard friendly this time of year. the whole section of water at the resort is a no wake zone so you we can chill on the beach and not worry about getting your boat swamped.

we used to have the fathers day weekend here....and it was bad because of traffic and water conditions. we moved it south of the dam to big river and its been a hit ever since. We cant do big river this time of year because the water levels are lower then desired.

I wasn't bitching, was messing with Nordie and calling him a bitch ;) I have been to TB twice, when we rented a houseboat, and IMO I thot it it was a shithole, and that was in summer. As for BW, I haven't been there in years, don't even remember the place. I'm also with Ralph on the craps deal. Had a blast boating, partying, and a little gambling at the craps table at night at the last Avi trip

I am NOT doing the temple bar drive again!!! The 2 years I did attend the trip I did it in a small 4 cylinder car and it still took 8.5 hours. Now imaging that towing a boat! No thank you! Parker is waay more centraly located. I have no problem towing my boat to parker.
And one of the funniset things for me about going to the river is the night life , wich temple bar has absolutly none of!

Yeah im for the river but water levels arent optimum that time of the year...thats why me n brad started chatting about parker...specially that time of the year....i didnt think this was going to be a shit storm...figured more people would be on board....on a side note yes skipped started the tb threads for me...this whole tb deal was my idea...and come sunday last year it was my idea to look at another venue due to the fact that no one looked like they had a whole crap load of fun

Oh I'm fine with this, and it's great! Don't get me wrong. Any chance to hang with the crew is a good day! 2.5 hours from Vegas though Brad? REALLY? Use your TRUCK to tow the boat, not someones Prius..........It's 3.5 hours to Parker from PHX and yes 5 hours to TB. A trip worth the drive. So is Parker.

I was only pointing out, and I think Marc, Chromie, Nordie and I are the only ones to make both TB trips, hence the only ones with a valid opinion. Tradition has it's place and many memories were made these last 2 years. My kids love that place. Crewcheifs daughter, I think, had a good time, and theres something else to be said for the so-called "sour" bartender who drove home and brought us back her personal BBQ utensils and supplies last year for the parking lot BBQ. It could only go smoother from here, but that's me. Lack of planning and communication on OUR part I think was to blame on the bar issue.

If I want a craps, poker or blackjack table, I can drive 15 minutes to one from nearly anywhere, anytime in AZ. This is all about us and boating.

As far as amenities, most of you camped IN THE DIRT at Mcintyre last year, and beleive me, amenities there are far fewer than at TB! Somewhat closer access to more, granted. I just don't get that gripe. Gas prices in Blythe are not that unlike TB. WAY above AZ prices, and how many bars, if Tony did NOT have the trailer, were at Mcintyre?

Did ANYONE NOT have a good time at TB????   :screwy:

I will still make TB this year, and will as much as possible. I think the twin jet has a good chance to make the entrance to the Grand Canyon from there and back and we're gonna try it at least once when the boat is done.  ;) I will make this trip, but I think it needs to be another separate trip in early April and my .02, TB needs to remain.

Rant over, see you guys wherever this year.

Ray

Ray...i concur with some of your points...but on the other hand i know you can agree with me that last years trip "compared to 2009" that things have changed at temple..  Honestly im looking forward to a long term deal...and temple just simply rubbed me the wrong way...i talked to bob atleast 4 times before we came out there last time....granted hes the general manager out there i single handidly told him make sure the bar is stocked up...when the restraunt. People told me that the bar was closed. .i was simply devistated....so what did i do i went to bob and he made it happen at the bar...the iver all tab for 2 hours in their bar was $750...my point is i dont want to pull teeth to make something normal happen...lets give parker a shot..."you cant knock it till you try it "

Going 5-10 over the speed limit with boat in tow, Laughlin is 1.5 hours. Havasu is typically 1 hour longer, and Parker is past Havasu
