What is the cheapest and quickest way to get a boat painted that would be good enough for one season? I am thinking of picking up a boat that needs lots of TLC and I just need it to look halfway decent for the season and then I will tear it back down and really get into it.

Believe me when i say this..... Save your money and just run it for the season, and during the down time get it done...

Spray paint it white. It will look good from 10 feet no matter how crappy you did. You could always use marine poly - but that is like 40 bucks a quart...

Let forked up practice on your boat - It will probably come out better than the paint shop!

SCUFF IT UP WITH WET 500 AND SHOOT IT WITH A SINGLE STAGE. I WOULD USE OMNI ITS CHEAP AND HALF WAY DESCENT.

This thing is really ugly. I am thinking just white. Even if I spent $250 - $300 so it didn't look like a floating turd I would be happy.
If forkedup wants to practice on it he can be my guest. I'll even have a cooler full of beer.

How about posting a photo of this so-called wreck of a boat. It may not be as bad as you think. A simple fix may get you by until you want to do it right.

Yep, there's one in El Cajon on the corner of Main and Marshall. I get gas across the street at the chevron every time I go to SD. I got my first car (70 bbc Nova) painted at the one in Downey when I was in hs. Man what a crappy job lol.

If you plan on slapping a cheap paint job on it now and then having it repainted next year, that may cost you more because the painter you use next year will probably want to strip the cheap sh*t off which = more labor and more $$$ in the long run. just my .02

Do like I'm doing... make the minor repairs and then rattle can those areas to come close to matching. Then come late summer or early fall, get busy and do it right the first time. It won't coat you $200 - $300 just for a cheap job that you won't like. Use good rattle paint though... It'll last longer. 8)

The boat needs seats too and that was one reason to change the boat from brown and whatever other color it is to white and something else so when I get white seats i wont look to funky. Or should I just do the seats how I want and throw towels over them til it gets painted? hahaha. Nothing like lower river boats!

Even with the upholstery done, I still cover with towels when using the boat.

Wait on the seats until you decide how you are going to paint your boat.

I would like to wait for the seats til just about everything is done but I can't afford to paint it exactly how I want it before I want to take it out and get new interior too. That's why I was just thinking of throwing down some white on this thing just so it wont look too bad for this summer. I can't be a boat bitch for another season. I gotta get something in the water by the 4th of July.

krylon = very cheap way to go, prep it right, krylon clear coat, wet sand and polish, it can come out as a decent 10' paint job, i did my step fathers hood on his little truck in black using krylon, did not turn out to bad and it did not take to long to do, it has been about a month or so now and it is holding up good, i don't forsee any issues with it, this would not be my first choice for paint but it will be an inexpensive way to do it, and if you are doing white it will not show the imperfections as bad as a darker color :)

+1. I've used Kyrlon on alot of stuff, hols up well and lays smooth for the cost

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. I am off work now and heading for Blythe. I am gonna pick up the boat on Monday and I will post some pics so you guys can see what I am talking about. Have a fun and safe weekend.

thats not an option, its been painted over with house paint then sanded off. theres not much clear gel left...if any at all. also, the boat was capped on one side (side not pictured) so theres a lot of primer work done there.
so how do you like it? ralph told me you picked it up yesterday. hope it works out to get you back on the water soon!

Well, I think I would then wet sand to the best you can and shoot some clear on it or do like you did Brad, and just prime it with epoxy and then single stage it. Go for the real paint later on.

Seen it done, still don't believe it... Two quarts of any color you want Rustoleum, 400 grit wet/dry, and those little hot dog rollers and a pan. Color sand it fairly smooth, mask off the pretty parts, roll it on a nice day (not too damn hot) , let it dry for 2-3 weeks and give it a light buff (not too heavy of compound) just to get the shine to come through, 8) Viola! you'll be outa here for fifty bucks tops and best of all your mother couldn't tell. My freind did this two years ago to a POS Tahiti (garage sale find) and it still looks killer (even though the F-er is yellow) I'm telling you BACKWOODS BABY!!! best of all it will come off with Martin Senior Smart Remover ($28 a can)

Twelve years ago I painted my 20' Spectra with Awl Grip marine LP, using a roller, in my front driveway. The paint still looks very good today even though it has never been wet sanded, rubbed out, or even waxed. Cost was around $120 total, used less than a quart of red and a pint of white, plus catalyst, reducer, and accelerator.
I invite you to come over and look at it since you're local. I have enough white paint laying around the shop for you to do your boat. You'll just have to buy some epoxy primer and roller sleeves.

I used some stuff I found in a auto parts store. Pretty much it's just spray paint. I want to see how it holds up. After all said and done I don't know if it will. As long as it makes it through a season or two I will be happy. Now I get to get the rest of it together and make sure everything else works and that I like everything before I put too much more into it. I have been collectiong parts for a while now it's time to slap it together.

No. It's not cleared yet. Clearing and pinstriping tomorrow. A little black around the red. There are a couple of spots that got phucked up and I tried sanding and matching paint but I wasn't happy with it. I am gonna need some stickers. :)

I got busy and sidetracked doing other stuff. So hopefully this weekend the motor will go in and I can finish up some loose ends. I cleaned up my old trailer and got the boat on that so I have that competitive trailer and those round tanks I got from you that I am not going to use. If you know of anyone looking for a trailer or tanks let me know. I will get some pics this weekend and post them up.
