Holy Crack Batman.   :o  Looks like you may need to pull the old wood out and replace with new and then fix the crack in the glass.  Then coat the new wood with a layer of glass cloth and resin.

If the crack extends up from the steering wheel to the deck, you'll have to redo it as stated, but it is a tough job. If the crack is just what is shown under the steering wheel, I would be very tempted to drill and bolt those 2 plates together, especially if you can get a decent bite on good wood in between the plates.

Gary has told you the "right" way to do it, lotta work. Depending on the boat I'd think about maybe digging out some of the dead wood and fill it with marine tex, sandwich with those plates, call it good for a while. Dont know what the rest of the dash loks like, you may want to replace the wood, fill some holes, mount some new gauges and/or a radio...who knows

You don't need to cut out the glass, just the bad wood behind the dash and then replace with new.  You can taper back the edges of the cracked glass and when you get ready to place the new wood, coat it with resin and add a layer of mat, wet it out good and then put in place and clamp (lots of clamps) tightly.  Once that has set up, go ahead and give the rest of the new wood a coat of resin and maybe a layer of glass cloth.  Then on the cracked glass on the dash, just start filling in with mat until it is level or above and block sand it back down to smooth.  Just my 2 cents and the way I would do it.  It's going to be a job but you'll be happier in the long run.

Mat is the stronger of the 2 and the cloth is for finish.  No, you taper the edges back on the face of the dash and then build out from the center until you are a little above the dash face level and then sand to match.

wow! just found some wood rot around where the pump opening is cut out.  :banghead:
Wood is soft. Does this mean the transom is shot ? The wood out around the cut sounds solid. Thanks

SOunds like you may have a few chores for the winter.  If the pump is still hanging on, you might get by and then have a hobby to play with after the season is over.

That pump alone is worth more then the 400, pull the pump save it for the next one or sell it outright. just sell the bare hull or dump it.

Don't forget to feather back the edges about an inch or so where you can before glassing.  It's really not so bad.  You may even be able to save the existing wood.  Looks like you may need to jack up under the crack to bring the 2 pieces together and then glass and clamp.  Glass the back side as well.  Oh yeah, what he said - don't forget the dog.  :D

You can do this two different ways (probably more, but I'm lazy right now)...The easiest way is to run a couple of screws through the transom until the resin cures....But you have some holes to deal with later.

The second is to build some vertical risers and bolt them to the motor mount holes and use those as pushing points with some clamps or even a couple of cheapie scissor jacks..

Otherwise, the old fashoned way.................................... ..hire a day laborer to hold it for three or four hours while the resin kicks.  :sly:

jk (sort of)
