to answer the original question....as far as paint, i dont think theres any difference between the top and bottom that is used when one paints their boat.

most boats are gelcoat, or gelcoat base then painted on top of it.

I have seen many people do it and both my boats have paint over gel. You just have to prep it the right way and make sure you prime it.

The black stuff on the bottoms is sometimes called "lubribond" It'll impregnated the gel and have to be sanded off even though the stuff will rub off . Rattle can or brush on . Never heard of the bottom having a diffrent finish but then again , I dont know shit.

You can paint over Gel, it's not recommended if you have stress cracks though. If you have stress cracks it's best to sand the gel all the way to the glass so you can repair it, otherwise it'll just crack through the paint as well. Paint can be made to last just as long as gel if not longer.
As far as two different paints on top and bottom half is no, when they lay the gel its with all the same material. From what I understand with boats is that everything is backwards in the molds, clear, then colors, then glass.
But if your boat doesn't have many stress cracks then paint could be suitable, and a lot cheaper.

Let me the first to say that I don't know sh!t.

With that said, I'm deep into this process myself and have spent alot of time talking to a number of folks about paints and what to use where. For what it's worth, it has been pretty unanomous (sp?) that everyone says to stay away from base coat/clear coat for the bottom. Sides and top, fine but on the bottom they think I'd be much happier with a single stage AU paint. All of them said the BC/CC would scratch easier and most said it also will peel if sprayed on the bottom. One gentleman that paints hydros said that it has been his experiance that the BC/CC does not have the "attaching strength" that a single stage AU has and for speeds in excess of 60 or 70, you increase your risk of peeling back the BC/CC.
Now I will say, most of the folks I talked to assumed a heavy use of the boat. Up here where it's currently pouring rain and 58 degrees (on August sumbitchin 25!

) we don't get enough time to use our boats enough for anyone to be classified as "heavy use" but you lucky SOBs down there probably do.

So, Like I said I don't know nuthin but thought I would share what I have been told through my inquiries. Good luck and take lots of pictures......John

Well when paint is applied correctly it can last just a long. The whole paint vs. Gel Coat war will go on forever. Having personally helped in painting a few boats, I can believe it can be done right. Lots of car painters like to sand their primer down to 600 wet sand grit or maybe higher, but if you want a grabbing paint 320 should be the highest, after that a good wetsand and buff to get rid of orange peel. Single stage paint would be the strongest, but also lacks in shine quality. Here's a few examples of painted boats.

19' Charger, 14 different colors painted with clear, had lasted 8 years of two trips a month beatings.

18' Sleekcraft, painted over 10 years ago in someones back yard (kinda dusty pic)

18' Hondo T-Deck, actually not sure of the age of the paint, but no chips or flakes

They're all base clear. The brown boat was done with Dupont but I can't remember what the other two were
