I'm sure this topic has been talked about a lot but I couldn't find anything up top so I figured I just write a new thread. What are your guys thoughts about gelcoat vs regular paint? I'd like to repaint a boat that I recently bought that is pink so I'm wondering what a good route would be? I realize regular paint would be cheaper but does it keep as well or shine as well?

It is no where near as tough as gel. But the shine is better with paint. If it's a family boat with kids all over it gel would be the way to go.

I bought a 20' Spectra project last season. The deck was 3 different colors of primer. I sanded it down and sprayed 2 coats of white marine eurethane until I picked my final colors. When hot weather came the boat went to the river so no more paint work got done.
The deck survived ice chests, dog paws, sandals and more. Still looks good. And less than $100 for the "temporary " paint.

Standard automotive paint. Both of my boats were painted not gelled.

Another thing to consider is how much do you really love the boat. Unless you are going to do all the work yourself you are gonna be looking at anywhere from 6-12k on paint or gel. In some cases it would be the same price to have a new boat layed up

This is true ... Couldn't believe what they they wanted to charge to gel coat . More colors more money . Ended up doing the gel coat my self came out pretty good. Next boat I do will be shot with paint though ..🤑

Not to hi jack the thread, but to add some depth to the question: if one were to choose paint, should the existing gel coat be completely sanded off?
